History

1999

The Forestry Science Program (PIK) at USU was established in 1999 based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 04/DIKTI/Kep/1999 dated January 7, 1999, regarding the establishment of the Forest Management (MNH) Study Program and the Forest Cultivation (BDH) Study Program. Structurally, PIK was directly under the Rector of USU as it was planned to be developed into a Faculty of Forestry. Initially, the office of the Forestry Science Program was located in the Rector's Office Building, before moving to the West Wing of the Faculty of Agriculture Building at USU.

2001

In 2001, to expand the field of forestry studies, the Forestry Science Program (PIK) introduced a new study program, the Forest Product Technology (THH) Study Program, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 2285/D/T/2001 dated July 4, 2001. The THH Study Program fulfilled the requirements for the formation of the Faculty of Forestry and complemented the existing MNH and BDH Study Programs.

2004

In 2004, the Forestry Science Program (PIK) was renamed the Forestry Department to enhance academic management efficiency and effectiveness. Structurally, the Forestry Department was no longer directly under the Rector but became part of the Faculty of Agriculture at USU, as stipulated in the Rector's Decree No. 627/JO5/SK/KP/2004 dated May 14, 2004. The Forestry Department retained its three study programs: MNH, BDH, and THH.

2007

Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 163/Dikti/Kep/2007 on study program codification and structuring, and the Rector's Instruction No. 702/JO5/KP/2005 dated May 7, 2005, the MNH, BDH, and THH Study Programs were merged into a single Forestry Study Program. Consequently, the Forestry Department was renamed the Forestry Study Program in alignment with the updated nomenclature from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The previously existing study programs were reclassified as departments: MNH, BDH, and THH.

2010

The MNH, BDH, and THH Study Programs were fully integrated into the Forestry Study Program. These were no longer separate study programs but became study concentrations within the academic activities. This change was formalized through the Rector's Decree No. 2989/H5.1.R/SK/SDM/2010 regarding the appointment and dismissal of department and laboratory heads under the Faculty of Agriculture at USU.

2014

In 2014, the Faculty of Forestry at USU was officially established based on the Rector's Decree No. 1549/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2014. There was a transitional phase in academic management from the Forestry Study Program to the Faculty of Forestry until the inauguration of the new faculty leadership in 2016.

2016

The Rector's Decree No. 839/UN5.1.R/SK/SDM/2016 formalized the appointment of the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry for the 2016–2021 term. Structurally, the Faculty of Forestry consisted of one Forestry Study Program with three departments: MNH, BDH, and THH. The Dean’s Office and part of the administrative team began operating in the YEL Building, located north of the Forestry Faculty Lecture Building at USU.

2017

The Department of Forest Resource Conservation (KSH) was officially established in 2017 under Rector's Decree No. 266/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2017. This addition brought the total to four departments under the Forestry Study Program: MNH, BDH, THH, and KSH. In 2018, the Faculty of Forestry launched a Master’s Program in Forestry based on Rector's Decree No. 1400/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2018, bringing the total to two study programs: the Undergraduate Program in Forestry and the Master’s Program in Forestry.

2021

In 2021, under new leadership at USU, organizational restructuring was conducted. The four departments within the Faculty of Forestry were consolidated and centrally managed under the Forestry Study Program, led by a head and secretary, as outlined in the Rector's Decree No. 2362/UN5.1.R/SK/SDM/2021. The MNH, BDH, THH, and KSH departments were reclassified as study concentrations. On January 10, 2022, academic activities for the Forestry Study Program moved to a new building on USU Campus 2 in Bekala, Simalingkar A, Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. The Faculty of Forestry became the pioneer faculty to occupy USU Campus 2 Bekala.
