The Master Degree of Forestry Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has been accredited with a “GOOD” status by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), ranked second-tier in SINTA, and recognized for its USU TALENTA excellence in the fields of Tropical Sciences and Medicine, Agroindustry, Local Wisdom, Sustainable Energy, Natural Resources (biodiversity, forests, marine resources, mining, and tourism), Technology (appropriate technology), and Arts (ethnic-based arts), with a specialization in natural resource management. The Master Degree of Forestry Study Program at USU is designed to serve as one of the centers of excellence in the development of tropical forestry science and technology in Sumatra.
The reasons for choosing the Master Degree of Forestry Study Program include: (1) the program produces graduates who are creative, innovative, and possess strong integrity in forest management, are environmentally responsible, and have insights into eco-technology-based forestry entrepreneurship; (2) it is supported by internationally recognized laboratory infrastructure, including the Mangrove Innovation Center of Excellence (PUI), the Bamboo Innovation Center of Excellence (PUI), the Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Studies, the Center for Policy and Social Forestry Studies, as well as other environmental research centers; (3) the program is supervised by Professors and Doctors with international reputations and scholarly works recognized at both national and international levels; and (4) it is supported by regional, national, and international forestry partners in the development and application of forestry science and engineering technologies.

In 2027, the Master of Forestry Study Program will become one of the centers of excellence in the development of Sumatran tropical forestry sciences and technology
- Organizing professional master's level education based on research and community service to produce human resources with integrity, mastering science, technology, and art in the field of forestry, and being able to lead development and society.
- Developing and disseminating the latest and superior forestry science and technology as part of efforts to solve problems in the management, utilization, conservation, and technology of tropical forest resources through an integrated or multidisciplinary scientific approach.
- Creating higher education institutions that become a reference for various parties in the management, utilization, conservation, and technology of tropical forest resources in the regional, national, and international scope.
- Developing an integrated laboratory in the field of tropical forestry with a focus on developing tropical forest resources that are endemic to Sumatra.
Program Educational Objectives (PEO) of Master Forestry Degree Program
- Producing masters of forestry who (a) have integrity, (b) master the science and knowledge of tropical forestry, (c) are able to create innovations and solutions to problems in the field of tropical forestry, (d) are able to lead teams and communities in development.
- Conducting advanced-level research and service activities to produce the latest concepts, models, and technologies in the management, utilization, and conservation of resources in the field of tropical forestry.
- Developing centers of excellence in disaster risk reduction, especially matters related to tropical forest resources, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, coastal safety belts from tsunamis, and risk reduction due to hurricanes, floods, and landslides.
- Building cooperation with various institutions at home and abroad for the development of science and technology for the management and utilization of tropical forests.
- Developing master of forestry graduates who have integrity and loyalty in sustainable forest management.
- Developing master of forestry graduates who are able to create new innovations in the management, utilization, processing, and conservation of tropical forests.
