In his presentation, Yepta Jaya Sahputra Barus explained that carbon trading is one of the key instruments for controlling greenhouse gas emissions and supporting climate change mitigation efforts. He noted that the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases caused by human activities, such as fossil fuel consumption, deforestation, and forest degradation, has triggered various environmental impacts, ranging from rising global temperatures to increasingly extreme weather patterns.

The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted an International Community Service Program on June 18–19, 2026, at Taman Eden 100 in Toba Regency, North Sumatra. The activity served as a collaborative platform involving higher education institutions, conservation area managers, local communities, and international partners in supporting environmental conservation efforts and sustainable natural resource-based community empowerment.

The Faculty of Forestry of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) once again demonstrated its commitment to advancing scientific development and international collaboration through the organization of the 2nd International Conference on Bamboo, Forestry Resources, and Application (IC-BaFoRA) 2026, held on Wednesday (June 17) at Grandhika Hotel Medan and conducted in a hybrid format via Zoom Meeting.

The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), received an official visit from the Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation and Creative Foundation Indonesia (PRCF Indonesia) on Monday, June 15, at the Faculty of Forestry USU. The meeting aimed to strengthen institutional relations and explore potential collaboration in education, research, and community service.

“Make the most of this Field Work Practice opportunity to learn directly from practitioners and field managers. Absorb as much knowledge as possible, uphold the reputation of the alma mater, and demonstrate professional attitudes wherever you are placed,” he advised all participants.

“The Forest Ecosystem Introduction Practice is an opportunity for students to directly understand various components of forest ecosystems. Therefore, make the most of this activity to learn, broaden your insights, and develop skills that will become important provisions in your academic and professional journey as future foresters,” said Prof. Arida.

During the activity, students, lecturers, and faculty leaders planted more than 100 tree saplings in the USU Arboretum area. The tree-planting activity served as a tangible contribution by the academic community of the Faculty of Forestry USU in supporting conservation efforts, increasing vegetation cover, and strengthening the role of the USU Arboretum as a center for education, research, and biodiversity conservation.

Chair of P2EH, Dr. Luthfi Hakim, stated that coordination with all stakeholders is an important step in supporting the smooth implementation of the activity and providing optimal learning experiences for students.

The Natural Fiber and Natural Dye Research Cluster (KK SAZWA) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully organized a two-day workshop entitled “Beyond The Loom: Innovation in Malay Weaving Tools and Sustainable Natural Fiber Exploration” on June 6–7, 2026. The event was held at two different venues: the Hall of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) USU on the first day and the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) USU Building on the second day.

“This occasion is a very valuable opportunity for all of us. Trees not only provide ecological benefits as oxygen producers, carbon absorbers, and guardians of environmental balance, but also offer various social and economic benefits that can be enjoyed by both present and future generations,” she stated.
