The Faculty of Forestry at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has been a new force in the forestry field since 2014 and has shown its achievements as one of the best forestry faculties in Indonesia. This achievement is reflected in the 2024 Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR), where USU Forestry ranked 5th as the best forestry program in Indonesia. With a commitment to graduating the best alumni, the USU Faculty of Forestry offers high-quality education through two study programs, namely the Undergraduate Program in Forestry and the Master Program in Forestry, which have been accredited with Very Good and Good, respectively by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT).
History
1999
The Forestry Science Program (PIK) was established at USU in 1999 based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 04/DIKTI/Kep/1999 dated January 7, 1999, concerning the establishment of the Forest Management Study Program (MNH) and the Forest Cultivation Study Program (BDH). Structurally, PIK is directly under the USU Rector because it will soon be developed into the Faculty of Forestry. The Forestry Science Program office was initially located in the Rector's Bureau Building but later occupied the West Wing Building of the USU Faculty of Agriculture.
2001
In order to develop the scientific field, in 2001 the Forestry Science Program (PIK) added one more study program, namely the Forest Products Technology (THH) Study Program based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 2285 / D / T / 2001 dated July 04, 2001, concerning Permission to Implement the THH Study Program. This THH Study Program is a requirement for the formation of the Faculty of Forestry and complements the existing study programs, namely the MNH Study Program and the BDH Study Program.
2004
The Forestry Science Program (PIK) changed its name to the Forestry Department in 2004 in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of academic management. Structurally, the Forestry Department is no longer directly under the USU Rector, but under the USU Faculty of Agriculture. Based on USU Rector Decree No. 627/JO5/SK/KP/2004 dated May 14, 2004, concerning the Appointment of Heads and Secretaries of Study Programs and Heads of Laboratories at the Department of Forestry Science, Faculty of Agriculture USU, the Department of Forestry still has three study programs, namely MNH Study Program, BDH Study Program, and THH Study Program.
2007
Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 163/Dikti/Kep/2007 concerning Codification and Arrangement of Study Programs, and USU Rector Letter No. 702/JO5/KP/2005 dated May 7, 2005 concerning Instructions for Changing the Names of All Departments or Sections within USU into Departments, the MNH, BDH, and THH Study Programs were merged into one study program, namely the Forestry Study Program. Therefore, the Forestry Department automatically changed its name to the Forestry Study Program. This is in accordance with the latest policies and nomenclature from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The names of the study programs that were previously under the Forestry Department also adjusted their names to become departments so that the Forestry Study Program has three departments, namely the MNH Department, BDH Department, and THH Department.
2010
Three study programs namely MNH, BDH, and THH Study Program merged into Forestry Study Program. Thus, structurally there are no longer MNH, BDH, and THH Study Programs, but in academic activities, they are of interest. Based on USU Rector Decree No. 2989 / H5.1.R / SK / HRM / 2010 concerning the Dismissal of Heads and Secretaries of Departments, Study Programs, and Heads of Laboratories and the Appointment of Heads and Secretaries of Study Programs and Heads of Laboratories at the USU Faculty of Agriculture.
2014
In 2014, the USU Faculty of Forestry was officially established based on USU Rector Decree No. 1549/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2014. There was a transition period of academic management from the Forestry Study Program to the Faculty of Forestry until the new Dean was appointed in 2016 to lead the Faculty of Forestry USU.
2016
Decree of the Rector of USU No. 839/UN5.1.R/SK/SDM/2016 on the Appointment of the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU for the Period 2016-2021. Structurally, the Faculty of Forestry has one Forestry Study Program with three departments, namely the MNH Department, the BDH Department, and the THH Department. The Deanate and part of the Administration began to occupy the YEL Building to the north of the USU Faculty of Forestry Lecture Hall.
2017
In 2017, the Department of Forest Resources Conservation (KSH) was formed at the USU Faculty of Forestry based on USU Rector Decree No. 266/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2017 dated February 27, 2017, concerning the Establishment of Departments at the USU Faculty of Forestry. The Department of Forest Resources Conservation became the fourth department where previously there were 3 other departments. The complete departments at the Faculty of Forestry USU are the Department of Forest Management, the Department of Forest Cultivation, the Department of Forest Products Technology, and the Department of Forest Resources Conservation. Each of these departments is led by a department head and a department secretary. The four departments are equipped with laboratories for each department led by a laboratory head. The appointment of department chairmen and secretaries as well as laboratory heads at the Faculty of Forestry USU is stipulated based on USU Rector Decree No. 383/UN5.1.R/SK/SDM/2017 dated March 08, 2017, concerning the Appointment of Department Chairmen and Secretaries and Laboratory Leaders at the Faculty of Forestry USU for the 2017-2022 Period.
2018
Based on the Rector's Decree No. 1400/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2018, the Faculty of Forestry USU was given the opportunity to officially open the Master's Program in Forestry in 2018.
2021
The leadership of the new USU Chancellor in 2021 made an organizational restructuring, including four departments in the Faculty of Forestry that were eliminated, which were then managed by the Forestry Study Program led by the head of the study program and the secretary of the study program, based on USU Chancellor Decree No. 2362/UN5.1.R/SK/SDM/2021 concerning the Dismissal of Department Heads and Secretaries, Heads and Secretaries of Study Programs and Heads of Laboratories, and Appointment of Heads and Secretaries of Study Programs and Heads of Laboratories of the Faculty of Forestry USU for the 2021-2026 Period. The four study interests that have been determined will be led by the head of the study interest. Each study interest has educational laboratory facilities and research laboratories, namely the Forest Management Laboratory, Forest Cultivation, Forest Products Technology, and Forest Resources Conservation.
2022
Since January 10, 2022, the academic activities of the Forestry Study Program of the Faculty of Forestry occupy a new building at Campus 2 Bekala, Simalingkar A, Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, with a distance of about 10 km from Campus 1 USU Padang Bulan. The Faculty of Forestry is the first faculty to occupy Campus 2 Bekala. The building with the concept of green building is equipped with various facilities that support academic activities such as lecture rooms, laboratories, seminar rooms, final project examination rooms, faculty leader rooms, study program leader rooms, lecturer rooms, administrative rooms, GJM / GKM rooms, meeting rooms, archive rooms, library rooms, reading rooms, co-working spaces, musala, toilets, canteens, student organization rooms or student activity units, plazas, fields, parking lots, and arboretums with facilities that accommodate people with special needs (difabel).
