The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), initiated a Disaster Response Workshop in collaboration with JAGATARA North Sumatra and cross-sector stakeholders to formulate strategies for post-disaster recovery, food security, and environmental conservation based on scientific approaches and collaboration.

FAHUTAN PUBLIC RELATIONS — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), initiated the implementation of the Disaster Response Workshop as a strategic step to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in formulating post-disaster recovery efforts and enhancing environmental resilience in North Sumatra. The activity was carried out in collaboration with the Regional Executive Board (DPD) of JAGATARA North Sumatra as a key collaborative partner.

The workshop was held on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, at the IMT-GT Room, Rectorate Building, USU. The event was attended by national figure General of Police (Ret.) Drs. Agus Andrianto, S.H., M.H., Minister of Immigration and Corrections of the Republic of Indonesia and also a Member of the Advisory Board of the Central Executive Board (DPP) of JAGATARA, along with the Chairman and Secretary General of DPP JAGATARA. Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Prof. Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si.; the Chairman of DPD JAGATARA North Sumatra, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si.; and several prominent figures from North Sumatra, including Rajamin Sirait, S.E., and Rianto, S.H., M.H., Chairman of the Indonesian Digital Journalists Association (AJDI). The event was further attended by academics, practitioners, and social activists from various backgrounds, enriching the discussion and the formulation of post-disaster recovery strategies.

 

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Prof. Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., emphasized the crucial role of higher education institutions in delivering science-based solutions to address disaster-related challenges. He underlined that collaboration with various stakeholders, including JAGATARA North Sumatra, is key to ensuring that post-disaster recovery strategies are well-directed, effective, and sustainable.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of DPD JAGATARA North Sumatra, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si., stated that JAGATARA serves as a collaborative platform for strategic elements of the nation in supporting the vision of Golden Indonesia. Through this workshop, all components in North Sumatra were brought together to formulate disaster management agendas that extend beyond emergency response to include food security strengthening, economic recovery, and environmental conservation.

During the material presentation session, the Chairman of the JAGATARA Advisory Council, Prof. Drs. Heru Santosa MS., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of rapid response and comprehensive, ecosystem-based post-disaster recovery involving multiple stakeholders. He also highlighted the role of data and technology as integral components of disaster early warning systems. Several recommendations were presented, including strengthening post-disaster research, enhancing disaster mitigation literacy, optimizing disaster response posts, developing nurseries for plants with strong ecological protection functions, and reinforcing cross-sector partnerships.

 

The subsequent presentation was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ir. Abdul Rauf, M.P., who discussed the concept of post-disaster recovery based on food security and environmental sustainability. He emphasized that environmental rehabilitation and reconstruction are essential components of the disaster management cycle as mandated by Law Number 24 of 2007, with an approach that prioritizes the restoration of ecosystem functions and the sustainability of livelihoods for affected communities.

Through this initiative, the Faculty of Forestry USU reaffirmed its role as a center for scientific development and collaboration in building an adaptive, sustainable disaster management system oriented toward public safety and community welfare, together with JAGATARA North Sumatra and other relevant stakeholders.
