USU Faculty of Forestry community service team developed a tourism village through the Village Development Program in Timbang Lawan Village, Bahorok District, Langkat Regency. The development of this tourism village was carried out with the consideration of utilizing the potential of the village which borders the Gunung Leuser National Park and mitigating human-tiger conflict. Timbang Lawan Village is located near a world tourism destination, Bukit Lawang, making it very possible to develop.

In developing the tourism village, USU collaborates with the village government and community organization partner, Banana Island Tiger Conservation Community (BITCO). One of the ecotourism support tools developed is in the form of ecolodge.

The Program, led by Dr. Pindi Patana S.Hut., M.Si., is the continuation of the ecotourism landscape planning program that has been running since 2021 and tourism village planning in 2022. In 2023, this program was continued with the development of ecolodge as a conservation education center for students and the public under the name “Ecolodge USU Rantau Panjang” covering 1 Ha.

The USU Faculty of Forestry community service team also designed and assembled a solar power plant to meet the required electrical power. Solar power has been installed at Ecolodge USU Rantau Panjang. 600 watts of power was generated using 1 solar panel. With this power, the ecolodge can provide electrical power for 5 lamps as well as several charging points for cell phones and other small power devices.

The development of the ecolodge is also related to the activation of the ecolodge for various activities to support natural resource conservation. The development of the ecolodge will motivate partners to continue developing conservation activities in Timbang Lawan Village. It is hoped that the development of the USU Rantau Panjang ecolodge will receive broad support from various parties to add facilities and program sustainability so that the benefits can reach as broadly as possible.
