The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Science and Technology (PUI) Mangrove, officially held the Opening Ceremony of the International Summer Course 2026 on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the USU Research Institute. The event marked the opening of an international learning program focused on ecosystem research and environmental conservation.

The opening ceremony was enlivened by a traditional dance performance that introduced Indonesia's rich cultural heritage to participants. The atmosphere became even more vibrant with the screening of profile videos of the Faculty of Forestry USU and PUI Mangrove, showcasing the contributions of both institutions to scientific development, mangrove conservation, and collaboration with various stakeholders in environmental preservation.

The series of activities also featured presentations by several speakers from Indonesia and abroad, namely Dr. Sheriza and Dr. Sagaran from Malaysia, as well as Dr. Erni Jumilawaty and Dr. Bejo Slamet from USU. Through their presentations, the speakers shared knowledge and perspectives on ecosystem research and environmental conservation efforts. The participation of speakers from different countries broadened participants' insights while creating opportunities for exchanging knowledge and experiences in environmental research.

The lively atmosphere continued with various interactive games hosted by the master of ceremonies (MC). Participants enthusiastically took part in the activities, creating a warm, enjoyable, and friendly atmosphere from the first day of the program.

On this occasion, Wikstea was also present to introduce natural beverage products made from agarwood leaves and jeruju leaves. Jeruju is a type of mangrove plant commonly found in the coastal areas of North Sumatra. Wikstea's presence was part of an effort to introduce the potential of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), particularly mangrove-based products, to participants of the Summer Course 2026. This initiative also demonstrated how natural resources can be utilized innovatively to create added value.

Through the International Summer Course 2026, the Faculty of Forestry USU and PUI Mangrove are strengthening their commitment to promoting research-based education, expanding international academic networks, and increasing awareness of environmental conservation.

This activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through international learning and knowledge exchange; SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 14: Life Below Water through strengthening knowledge of ecosystem research and conservation; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through cross-border academic collaboration in support of sustainable development.
