The ITTO–BRIN General Lecture at the Faculty of Forestry, USU, featured international and national experts to discuss ITTO’s global role in tropical forest sustainability and the application of wood forensics from BRIN. The event concluded with the signing of an MoU to strengthen research and academic collaboration.
HUMAS FAHUTAN – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again presented a high-caliber academic forum through the ITTO–BRIN General Lecture held on Friday, 13 February 2026, at the Seminar Room of the Faculty of Forestry, USU. This activity became an important momentum to broaden students’ global perspectives on forestry issues, research, and sustainable forest governance.
The public lecture featured two speakers with strong track records at the international and national levels. Dr. Ir. Tetra Yanuariadi, M.Sc., IPU., from the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) explained ITTO’s role in safeguarding tropical forest sustainability, strengthening cross-country cooperation, and promoting legal and responsible timber trade. The global perspective brought by ITTO provided a concrete picture of the challenges and opportunities facing the forestry sector amid the dynamics of the global market.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ratih Damayanti, S.Hut., M.Si., from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) discussed the topic of wood forensics. She emphasized the importance of scientific approaches in identifying the origin of timber to support law enforcement and forest governance. According to her, wood forensics has become a strategic instrument in combating illegal logging while strengthening transparency in forest product supply chains.
The discussion was lively and interactive, moderated by Dr. Ir. Luthfi Hakim, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng. Students enthusiastically raised questions ranging from global timber trade issues to opportunities for applying wood forensic technology in Indonesia. Also in attendance were the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si., the Head of the Undergraduate Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng., the Secretary of the Undergraduate Forestry Study Program, Dr. Evalina Herawati, S.Hut., M.Si., along with members of the faculty who further enlivened the discussion session.
Beyond the public lecture, the event continued with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as an initial step to strengthen collaboration. This session was also attended by the Vice Dean II, Dr. Ir. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc., IPU., the Head of the Master’s Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Samsuri, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., ASEAN Eng., the Head of the MNH Laboratory, Dr. Anita Zaitunah, S.Hut., M.Sc., the Head of the KSH Laboratory, Dr. Ridahati Rambey, S.Hut., M.Si., the dean’s expert staff, and faculty members. This moment reaffirmed the Faculty of Forestry USU’s commitment to expanding academic and research collaboration networks at both national and international levels.
Through this series of activities, the Faculty of Forestry at USU demonstrated its strong commitment to opening access to global knowledge for students. It is hoped that the cross-perspective discussions and collaborations established will help nurture a generation of forestry professionals who are adaptive, critical, and ready to compete on the global stage.
