The USU Faculty of Forestry celebrated its 11th Anniversary and 26 Years of the Forestry Study Program under the theme “Like Roots: Though Unseen, Continually Impacting.” The event was held at the USU Bekala Campus and attended by university leadership, government representatives, strategic partners, and hundreds of academic community members as a commitment to education and sustainable natural resource management.

FORESTRY PR — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), commemorated its 11th Anniversary while also celebrating 26 years of the Forestry Study Program in an official event at Plaza Rimbawan, USU Bekala Campus, on Tuesday, 11 November 2025. Carrying the theme “Like Roots: Though Unseen, Continually Impacting,” this event became a moment of reflection and consolidation of the faculty’s contributions to education, research, and community service.

The event began with the singing of Indonesia Raya and Mars Rimbawan, followed by a joint prayer. The Chair of the Anniversary Committee, Dr. Ridahati Rambey, S.Hut., M.Si., reported that the series of activities had been ongoing since August and involved various academic and non-academic agendas such as public lectures, community service, an international photography competition, creative competitions, and sports activities.

The celebration was also attended by the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si.; the Expert Staff of the Governor of North Sumatra, Ir. Alfi Syahriza, S.T., M.Eng.Sc., representing the Governor; and the Deputy Regent of Deli Serdang, Lom Lom Suwondo, S.S. In addition, forestry partners from government agencies, universities, environmental NGOs, and the private sector also joined and expressed their support.

In his remarks, the Rector of USU delivered appreciation for the contribution of the Faculty of Forestry in strengthening the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

“The Faculty of Forestry is one of the main pillars supporting USU’s vision of becoming an excellent and sustainable university,” emphasized Prof. Muryanto.

The Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., also presented several strategic achievements, including the emergence of 11 professors within the faculty and the international ASIIN accreditation for both the undergraduate and master's programs in Forestry.

“Just like roots that support a tree’s strength, this faculty will continue to create impact through its works, service, and collaboration,” he stated.

On this occasion, the Dean also conducted the soft launching of three books authored by the academic community, including the book “Down to Earth: The Roots We Grew Together,” which documents the long journey of the USU Faculty of Forestry since its establishment in 1999 in Padang Bulan to its current location at the Bekala Campus.

Government representatives, both from the Province and Deli Serdang Regency, expressed appreciation and hopes that the presence of the USU Bekala Campus would help strengthen the capacity of surrounding communities, particularly in education and environmental conservation.

The series of events also featured scientific orations by experts such as Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, Dr. Meilinda Suriani Harefa, Erwin Kurnia Alamsyah Siregar, S.Hut., M.Si., and Fauzi Leilan, S.T., M.T. They discussed strategic issues such as forest conservation, community empowerment, and dynamics of forestry in the modern era.

The event was attended by approximately 400 participants, including university leadership, lecturers, staff, students, and external partners such as BBKSDA North Sumatra, BPDAS Wampu Sei Ular, BPKH Region I Medan, Balai PS, YSHL, YEL, PETAI, YOSL-OIC, WCS, GJI, and other organizations working in the environmental sector.

Closing the event, all participants took part in a fellowship session that strengthened the relationship among the academic community and the faculty's partners. The warm and friendly atmosphere illustrated that the USU Faculty of Forestry continues to grow deeper, create greater impact, and remain committed to becoming a center of forestry knowledge relevant to the future.
