FORESTRY PR - USU Faculty of Forestry once again demonstrated its commitment to environmental preservation through a community service activity held at the Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) of Pondok Buluh, Simalungun Regency. The event involved lecturers and students in efforts to sustain endemic species while utilizing the forest as a source of food and knowledge.
One of the Faculty’s lecturers, Prof. Rahmawaty, explained that the program focused on planting Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS), which provide both ecological benefits and high economic value.
“In addition, the community was introduced to environmentally friendly agroforestry concepts through interactive educational sessions that encouraged local participation,” said Prof. Rahmawaty on Saturday (June 28, 2025).
Interestingly, the event also featured training on seed propagation techniques using natural extraction, a method considered effective in maintaining the genetic diversity of Sumatra’s endemic species. This approach serves as a practical solution for seed supply in resource-limited areas.
The event was officially opened by the Head of KHDTK Pondok Buluh, Juto Kasudungan Malau, who expressed appreciation for USU’s green initiative.
“Academic support in protecting forest areas through research and community engagement is highly important, and this must continue to be emphasized,” Juto stated.
Also present were 2023 Forestry students from USU who are currently participating in the Forest Ecosystem Introduction Practice (P2EH). This cross-generational collaboration represents an important moment in fostering early conservation awareness.
Through its educational and participatory approach, the event marked USU’s concrete step in positioning KHDTK Pondok Bulu as an open natural laboratory—where science, conservation, and community empowerment synergize toward a sustainable forest future.
