FORESTRY PR — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted a field practicum through an educational visit to PT Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL) on Wednesday, 29 October 2025. This activity was attended by students together with the course lecturer, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yunasfi, M.Si., with the aim of strengthening students’ competence in understanding forest pest management, nursery practices, and the pulp industry directly in the field.
The activity began with remarks from the R&D Manager, Adventris Lasterina Hutagaol, S.P., M.Si., followed by a presentation delivered by Ir. Heri Sunarko, M.Si. The material focused on forest pests and diseases, covering the identification of key pests, potential plant damage, and control strategies applied in industrial plantation forest management.
After the presentation session, participants were directed to the field to follow the explanation given by Jonggi Simanungkalit, S.P., regarding the Helopheltis pest that attacks eucalyptus plants. Students learned about the characteristics of pest attacks, plant health observation techniques, and the mitigation methods used by the company. The field activity was also accompanied by Mario Samosir, S.P., and Hansen Tanaka Putra, S.P.
The practicum series continued in the nursery area, where students gained hands-on experience in seedling processes, seed care, and standard operational procedures for forest plant propagation. The material was delivered by Rosa Naibaho, S.P., with additional explanation from Kristine Sitompul, S.P., the Nursery Manager of PT TPL, who emphasized the importance of seedling quality in supporting the sustainability of industrial plantation forests.
As the final agenda, the group attended a visit to the PT TPL mini exhibition. Guided by Fransiska Purba, S.P., students were introduced to the pulp processing flow, from raw material sorting to production stages. Through visual explanations and demonstrations, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the professionally and sustainably managed pulp production chain.
The USU Faculty of Forestry expressed its appreciation to PT Toba Pulp Lestari for the warm welcome and learning facilities provided. Through this activity, students are expected to enhance their insight, skills, and readiness to face future challenges in forest management and the forest products industry.
