HUMAS FAHUTA – The Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), together with the North Sumatra Provincial Environmental and Forestry Agency (DLHK), conducted a site survey and measurement for the planned development of the North Sumatra Biodiversity Park (Taman KEHATI) at the USU Bekala Campus in Simalingkar, Deli Serdang, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The activity marked an initial stage in the planning process for a conservation area to be developed on land adjacent to the USU Arboretum.
The survey was conducted comprehensively through land measurements, coordinate-point determination, and boundary marking as the basis for planning the development of the KEHATI Biodiversity Park. The process aimed to ensure accurate spatial data so that the area could be developed in a well-planned and effective manner and in accordance with its intended conservation function.
The USU Faculty of Forestry team was led by the Vice Dean for Partnerships, Community Service, and Internationalization, Dr. Anita Zaitunah. The activity also involved mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) experts, Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha and Dr. Yunus Afifuddin, supported by laboratory staff Rizka Amelia and Nur Hidayat, as well as the Faculty of Forestry USU Public Relations Team, Adilla Fatimah Azzahra and Ida Mallia Ginting.
Meanwhile, the team from the North Sumatra Provincial DLHK consisted of Mea Fitri Kartika Sari, S.Hut., Lucy Amena Sembiring, S.T., Ir. Reinheart DMT Simarmata, S.Hut., Lauren Parasoran Pangaribuan, S.Hut., Jontara Pangaribuan, S.H., Pangeran Martin Butarbutar, S.Hut., and Ucok Firda Purba, S.P. All team members worked collaboratively to conduct field measurements and verification to obtain accurate data as the basis for developing the area.

The North Sumatra KEHATI Biodiversity Park is planned as a conservation area that will serve to protect local biodiversity while also functioning as a center for education, research, and community service. The area is also expected to support the conservation of biological resources and strengthen the role of the USU Bekala Campus as a natural laboratory for the academic community and the public.
The collaboration between the Faculty of Forestry at USU and the North Sumatra Provincial DLHK demonstrates strong synergy between higher education institutions and local government in promoting science-based environmental management. Through careful planning and cross-sectoral collaboration, the development of the KEHATI Biodiversity Park is expected to become a strategic step toward preserving the rich biodiversity of North Sumatra.
The activity also aligns with the commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15: Life on Land, through efforts to protect and sustainably manage terrestrial ecosystems, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through strengthened partnerships between higher education institutions and government in advancing sustainable development.
