Faculty of Forestry PR – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a community service program entitled “The Potential of Multipurpose Tree Species (MPTs) in Agroforestry Planting Patterns at Pondok Buluh Simalungun.” The program runs from August to October 2025 in the agroforestry area of the Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK), Pondok Buluh Village, Dolok Panribuan Subdistrict, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra.
This activity is designed to introduce and practice the planting of multipurpose trees or Multipurpose Tree Species (MPTs). These tree species are considered to provide various benefits, ranging from food sources and livestock feed to environmental conservation. Within agroforestry patterns, MPTs can grow alongside other crops, thus providing double benefits for the surrounding communities.
The atmosphere of the activity was filled with enthusiasm, involving lecturers, students, and residents of Pondok Buluh Village. The participants not only planted trees but also discussed the great potential of MPTs in supporting food security while sustaining forest ecosystems.
“Agroforestry patterns with multipurpose trees can be a smart solution, as they not only keep the environment green but also add value for the community,” said one of the program organizers.
Through this activity, the USU Faculty of Forestry hopes that the community will increasingly recognize the importance of multipurpose trees and be able to manage natural resources wisely. This program is tangible proof that forests and food can go hand in hand for a better life.
