Lecturers from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, conducted education and training on mounting deer antler ferns (Platycerium) for housewives on 21 February 2026. The activity equipped participants with practical skills while opening up opportunities for productive home-based businesses centered on ornamental plants.

HUMAS FAHUTAN – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, once again carried out a tangible community service initiative through a program titled “Education and Training on Platycerium Mounting as an Alternative Productive Business for Housewives,” held on 21 February 2026. The activity highlighted the potential of the ornamental deer antler fern (Platycerium) as a simple, aesthetic, and marketable home-based business opportunity.

The program was chaired by Dr. Kansih Sri Hartini, S.Hut., MP., and implemented by a team of Faculty of Forestry lecturers consisting of Dr. Ir. Ma’rifatin Zahrah, M.Si., Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut., M.Si., Deanova Frestiana Br. Pelawi, S.Hut., M.Sc., Dr. Agr. Faujiah Nurhasanah Ritonga, S.Hut., M.Si., Dr. Evalina Herawati, S.Hut., M.Si., Dr. Deni Elfiati, S.P., M.P., and Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut., M.Si. The entire series of activities was guided directly by the lecturers to ensure focused and optimal assistance for participants.

The training was conducted in a relaxed atmosphere but was highly practice-oriented. Participants were introduced to various types of Platycerium, how to select appropriate planting media, and neat, market-ready mounting techniques. The lecturers also shared plant care tips to keep the plants healthy and ensure the final products remain visually appealing when marketed.

Beyond the technical aspects, participants were encouraged to recognize the economic potential of ornamental plants. Discussions covered product packaging to make items more eye-catching, maintaining plant quality, and starting small-scale home businesses with relatively affordable capital. This approach is expected to help housewives build productive enterprises without leaving their primary responsibilities at home.

Through this activity, the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with the community through practical and relevant programs. It is hoped that deer antler fern mounting will not only become a new hobby but also develop into a sustainable source of additional income.
