On Monday, July 23, 2024, the USU Faculty of Forestry warmly welcomed the arrival of Kaka Slank and several Vespa communities, namely KBSS, Elders, and the Electric Vespa Community. The visit of the legendary band vocalist was the first time in history and became one of the special joys for the USU Forestry campus residents. The visit made by the singer of the song “Terlalu Manis” aims to do some tree planting around the USU Forestry campus area as a form of pro-conservation support. In addition to Kaka Slank and friends of the Vespa community, this planting activity was also attended and supported by BPDAS Wampu Sei Ular and by.U Telkomsel.
For the record, Om Kaka, as he is affectionately known, is one of the conservation activists, especially in coral reef conservation. Moreover, Om Kaka and other Slank personnel have also become Yaki Ambassadors to support the conservation of the Yaki (Macaca nigra) population, which has declined drastically in recent years. In some of his concerts, he is also seen slipping messages and invitations to preserve the environment as a form of his concern for preserving the ecosystem. The rock n roll band has also recorded several charity concerts to support nature and environmental conservation on four islands in North Sulawesi.
The Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., and all vice deans were seen directly leading the planting activity using various types of multipurpose trees. Before the planting began, Dr. Rudi Hartono and his staff opened the event by thanking all the guests who had attended, especially Kaka Slank and friends of the Vespa community. On this occasion, Dr. Rudi Hartono also explained several reasons for choosing multipurpose tree species (MPTS), including to provide broad benefits to the surrounding community and the academic community of the USU Faculty of Forestry in the form of fruits and environmental services, such as providing fresh air and as shade trees.
The hot sun did not dampen the spirit of Kaka Slank and the guests who attended to plant various superior seeds that had been provided. Together with the Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si, Vice Dean I, Dr. Alfan Gunawan Ahmad, S.Hut., M.Si, Vice Dean II, Dr. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc, Vice Dean III, Prof. Dr. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si, and the entire academic community of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Kaka Slank and guests planted high-quality seedlings in the holes that had been prepared. The seedlings used are MPTS tree seedlings such as avocado, guava, durian, and manga grafting results. Using grafted MPTS seedlings aims to increase fruit production and shorten the growth time to reach the mature tree phase.
On the sidelines of planting seedlings, Kaka Slank said he has been fond of farming lately and has a fairly large plantation. According to him, farming is a fun activity and can have a positive psychological effect. In addition, Kaka also expressed his happiness in caring for trees. Taking care of trees is like caring for a child, which must be cherished so that one day, it can provide extensive benefits to the surrounding area, he said. While educating, Kaka also expressed hope that the planted seedlings can grow well and provide extensive future benefits.
After planting the seedlings, the activity continued with a group photo with a collection of legendary Vespa motorbikes that have been converted into more environmentally friendly electric motorbikes. Furthermore, the event was closed with a casual discussion and yelled together in the Faculty of Forestry garden. Salam lestari, Fahutan Juara!!!
