Meanwhile, Rahmi and Dr. Hilma are head and deputy head of the Integrated Laboratory Unit (UPT Lab Terpadu) at USU. Staff from UPT Lab Terpadu also contributed to the success of this event.

The event was conducted in collaboration with the “Plastics Literacy Network,” a community established in Manila, Philippines, on July 17, 2019, and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Deirdre McKay, a professor of Sustainable Development at Keele University, UK.

The inaugural webinar was officially opened by the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at USU, Dr. Agus Purwoko, who expressed his enthusiasm for collaborations in both research and community service, whether on a local, national, or international scale, as exemplified by this event.

The topic of the first webinar series was Plastics Litter on Land. Prof. Deirdre McKay presented insights on Plastics and the Pandemic, while Prof. Dr. Rahmawaty, a professor of Forest Management, discussed The Potential for Utilizing Plastics Litter in Urban Areas for Community Revenue.

The webinar was attended by 87 participants from various institutions, both within USU and externally, including international participants from the Philippines, Australia, and the UK. Additionally, attendees from Indonesian provinces such as East Kalimantan, Jambi, Lampung, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra were also present.

This webinar series will be conducted monthly until December 2022, featuring six sessions under the main theme of “Reduce Plastics in Environment,” with diverse subtopics as follows:

Based on evaluations, the inaugural session was deemed successful. Feedback indicated that participants gained a better understanding of plastic waste issues, particularly on land, developed awareness of plastic waste problems in their surroundings, and expressed commitment to reducing plastic waste through simple actions such as avoiding plastic straws, using reusable shopping bags, and carrying refillable water bottles.
