The Faculty of Forestry of Universitas Sumatera Utara carried out a community service program entitled Community Assistance in Post-Flood Education Recovery in Langkat, North Sumatra in three flood-affected villages. The activity included learning assistance and the distribution of school supplies for children affected by the disaster.

FORESTRY PR — The Faculty of Forestry of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) carried out a community service activity entitled Community Assistance in Post-Flood Education Recovery in Langkat, North Sumatra, as a form of academic concern for the impact of natural disasters that disrupt community educational activities. This activity was conducted in three flood-affected villages in Langkat Regency, namely Pematang Cengal Village, Pantai Cermin Village, and Pekubuan Village.

 

This community service initiative focused on restoring children’s learning activities after the flood through educational assistance, strengthening learning motivation, and providing social support to affected communities. In addition to learning assistance, the USU Faculty of Forestry also distributed school supplies in the form of backpacks, notebooks, stationery, and other learning equipment to help children resume their activities normally.

 

The activity was attended by the Vice Dean II of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ir. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc., IPU., as well as the Vice Dean III of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si. Also present were the Head of the USU Undergraduate Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng., the USU Head of the Master’s Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Samsuri, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., ASEAN Eng., and the Secretary of the USU Master’s Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Nurdin Sulistiyono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU.

 

The involvement of the academic community was further strengthened by the presence of laboratory heads, namely Dr. Anita Zaitunah, S.Hut., M.Sc. (Head of the MNH Laboratory) and Dr. Ir. Luthfi Hakim, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the THH Laboratory). Several lecturers also participated, including Dr. Nelly Anna, S.Hut., M.Si., Dr. Agr. Faujiah Nurhasanah Ritonga, S.Hut., M.Si., Deanova Frestiana Br. Pelawi, S.Hut., M.Sc., Dwi Endah Widyastuti, S.Hut., M.Si., Onrizal, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., as well as Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha, S.Hut., M.Si., as the Chair of USU Peduli Volunteers, together with staff from the USU Faculty of Forestry.

 

Through this activity, the USU Faculty of Forestry reaffirmed its role not only as an institution of education and research, but also as part of a social solution in disaster situations. The assistance provided is expected to help restore children’s enthusiasm for learning and support the continuity of community education after the flood.

 

This community service activity represents a tangible commitment of the USU Faculty of Forestry in implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, while also strengthening synergy between academics and the community in addressing disaster-related challenges in North Sumatra.
