To foster creativity and innovation among cooperatives and SMEs in North Sumatra by utilizing available natural resources, the North Sumatra Cooperative and SME Agency held an event titled "Development and Empowerment of Cooperatives and SMEs in Mangrove Tourism Areas as Natural Dyes through Ecoprint Techniques". The event featured speakers from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, namely Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut., M.Si., and Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D.
The event was conducted in two stages: the first stage for participants from Batubara Regency and the second stage for participants from Asahan Regency, with 40 participants in each stage.
Held from June 6–10, 2022, at Singapore City Hotel, Batubara, the program covered the potential of natural resources in North Sumatra, particularly in Batubara and Asahan, which are home to mangrove tourism areas. The utilization and development of these areas aim to create creative economic products that can enhance community welfare.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, participants were trained in fabric processing using natural dyes derived from mangrove plants through the ecoprint technique. The processed fabrics were then crafted into marketable products, with guidance from UMKM Nauli EcoPrint and Rumah Jahit Leoni practitioners.

At the end of the program, participants expressed their excitement about gaining new knowledge and skills in utilizing local natural resources. Some participants who had prior ecoprint training were enthusiastic about learning new techniques to improve their product quality.
The Program Subdivision Head of the North Sumatra Cooperative and SME Agency, Mr. Asalta Brahmana, S.E., M.Si., conveyed his hope that cooperative and SME actors in Batubara and Asahan would continue developing these skills and innovating to enhance their competitiveness. He also emphasized that the agency would conduct monitoring and evaluation to assess their business progress.
