The House of Representatives Expertise Agency with USU signed a Memorandum of Understanding, and a Focus Group Discussion was held at the Rector’s Audience Room on Tuesday (07/23/2024). This activity began with a speech by Dr. Inosentius Samsul, S.H., M.Hum (Head of the DPR RI Expertise Agency) and continued with remarks and the opening of the FGD by Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si. (Rector of the Universitas Sumatera Utara). In addition to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the House of Representatives Expertise Agency and the Universitas Sumatera Utara, there was also a Collaboration Agreement between the Center for Drafting Laws on Economics, Finance, Industry, Development, and People’s Welfare with 3 Faculties at the Universitas Sumatera Utara, namely the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Economics and Business. The next session continued with a Focus Group Discussion with the theme “Regulation of Strategic Commodities in the Plantation Sector and its Processing Industry to Encourage, Protect, and Improve the Welfare of Communities / Planters and Sources of Foreign Exchange Earnings for the State.” The Focus Group Discussion was hosted by moderator Dr. Wiwin Sri Rahyani, S.H., M.H. (Plt. Head of the Center for Law Drafting in the field of Ekkuinbang Kesra of the House of Representatives Expertise Agency). This Focus Group Discussion brought in the best resource persons in their fields. The first speaker was Prof. Dr. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, S.H., M.H., Head of the Doctoral Program in Law Studies at the USU Faculty of Law with a discussion of material on “Regulating strategic commodities in the plantation sector and its processing industry to ensure the certainty of strategic commodity management and its processing industry.” The second speaker was Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si., Vice Dean III of the USU Faculty of Agriculture, who presented material on “Terms, criteria, and types of strategic commodities in the plantation sector and the processing industry, as well as a comparison of practices in other countries.” The third speaker was Dr. Timbas Prasad Ginting, Chairman of the North Sumatra Branch of GAPKI, who presented material on “Constraints and future expectations in the management of strategic commodities in the field of plantations and the processing industry.” The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the House of Representatives Expertise Agency with USU and the Focus Group Discussion went well and smoothly. The Universitas Sumatera Utara, as the scholars, welcomed this collaboration with the hope that it can contribute to predicting opportunities and anticipating threats and challenges in the plantation sector, plantation product processing industry, industrial development, and related legal regulations. Therefore, this cooperation effort is the first step toward a better Indonesia.
