The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Seminar & Talkshow “Scientific Exploration of Natural Dyes and Fibers: From Laboratory to Industry” featuring an exhibition of natural yarns and fabrics as well as an Edu-Trip to CV. Kriya Melayu. This event opened new insights into the use of natural fibers and dyes in eco-friendly creative industries.

FORESTRY PR – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), successfully held a Seminar & Talkshow on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with the theme “Scientific Exploration of Natural Dyes and Fibers: From Laboratory to Industry” at Prof. Suhadji Hadibroto Hall, FEB USU. The event brought together researchers, academics, practitioners, and enthusiastic students to explore the great potential of natural dyes and fibers in supporting environmentally friendly industries.

 

A series of speakers shared their knowledge and experience, including Maya Ismayati, Ph.D. (Research Center for Biomass & Bioproducts BRIN), Dr. C. Dhanush (Postdoctoral Fellow BRIN), Arif Nuryawan, Ph.D. (Faculty of Forestry USU), Dr. Tengku Syarfina (Head of PUI Songket USU), Wibowo Ahmad, S.Tr (Founder of CV. Ramindo Berkah Persada Sejahtera), and Agus Handoyo, S.Sn (Padapa Natural Dye & Fiber). The Seminar and Talkshow was moderated by Dr. Iwan Risnasari, S.Hut., M.Si., who also served as the Event Committee Chair.

 

The event was opened with remarks by Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng., Head of the USU Zaswa Scientific Cluster, who emphasized the importance of bridging research and creative industries based on local wisdom.

 

“Today we are not only talking about research in the laboratory, but also how research results can add value to industry, culture, and society,” he said.

 

Meanwhile, Vice Dean III of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si., in his speech while officially opening the event, reaffirmed the faculty’s full support for sustainable research and innovation.

 

“We hope students can directly see the great opportunities from natural fibers and dyes that are environmentally friendly. This is a real contribution of forestry science to society,” he said.

 

In addition to the talkshow, the event was enlivened by an exhibition of processed natural fibers and dyes. Visitors could directly see how yarn spun from natural fibers was transformed into beautiful fabrics colored with natural dyes. The exhibition showcased how research and innovation could create eco-friendly products with high aesthetic value.

 

As a follow-up series, on September 10, 2025, participants joined an Edu-Trip to CV. Kriya Melayu (IR Songket) in Deli Serdang. There, participants witnessed the real application of natural dyes and fibers in the making of traditional songket.

 

This event is expected to be an important momentum in strengthening synergy between campuses, research institutions, and creative industries to support sustainability.
