This question was thoroughly answered in the BIAWAK Series #5 Webinar (Actual Talks of Forestry Insights). Of course, it is not just about reuniting with fellow academics and researchers in forest product technology. More than that, this event is a place to disseminate practical science, knowledge, and technology to the general public. Equally important is to be a starting point for cooperation and collaboration in education, research, and community service.

The BIAWAK webinar is a monthly routine activity by the Sumatra JATI Center for Forestry Studies and Analysis (PUSAKA JATI). BIAWAK Series #5 was held on Friday, November 5, 2021, from 08.00 to 12.00 WIB online via Zoom Meeting. It coincided with the 7th Anniversary of the USU Faculty of Forestry and the 22nd USU Forestry Study Program. The theme of the webinar was “Innovation and Utilization of Forest Products in a Modern, Efficient and Sustainable Way.”

Five deans of the Faculty of Forestry from the best universities in Indonesia attended as speakers, namely Prof. Dr. Rudianto Amirta (Dean of the UNMUL Faculty of Forestry), Dr. Farah Diba (Dean of the UNTAN Faculty of Forestry), Dr. Sigit Sunarta (Dean of the UGM Faculty of Forestry), Dr. Naresworo Nugroho (Dean of the IPB University Faculty of Forestry and Environment), and as host Dr. Rudi Hartono (Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry). The five deans have the same background, namely wood science and technology.

The event began with remarks from the Head of the Anniversary of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Moehar Maraghiy Harahap, M.Sc., and an introduction to the discussion by Dr. Agus Purwoko (Vice Dean 3 of the USU Faculty of Forestry). Moehar Harahap, M.Sc., explained several activities that have been and will be carried out in the series of Anniversary events of the USU Faculty of Forestry. This webinar event is one of the flagship events organized by PUSAKA JATI. In line with this, Dr. Agus Purwoko greatly appreciated PUSAKA JATI, a study center active in progressive development. PUSAKA JATI has become an icon of the USU Faculty of Forestry that is recognized at the local and national levels.

Two speakers from Kalimantan Island, Prof. Dr. Rudianto Amirta and Dr. Farah Diba presented forest product technology research development on their respective campuses. Specifically, Prof. Dr. Rudianto explained, “Redesigning the Role of the Forestry Industry in Supporting National Economic Improvement: Policy Innovation and Industrial Technologies.” In the future, the redesign of Indonesia’s forestry business will be carried out with a new direction and focus on priorities and production targets in the form of 1) strategic in supporting the country’s independence and sovereignty (energy, food, medicine, chemicals, etc.); 2) substitution of imported raw materials (high value); 3) oriented to meet domestic multi-sector needs - forestry product fever - “national timber house”; 4) developing export opportunity products (high value) - global trends; 5) encouraging employment and welfare for the community; 6) environmentally oriented and sustainable. The UNMUL Faculty of Forestry has developed forestry products through collaboration with industry in the form of A-TREO (A Tropical Rainforest Essential Oil), with medicinal products, cosmetics, food, low cholesterol poultry food, fish feed supplements, immune booster herbs, and ulcer antidotes.

Dr. Farah Diba explained “Innovation and Development of Wood-Destroying Termite Control Technology.” UNTAN has produced several innovations in termite control, such as patents for termite control tools with electromagnetic waves, patents for termite control methods on wood using liquid smoke biopesticides from palm trunks, patents for the process of making natural attractants from eucalyptus leaf organic materials for termite bait, and patents for the process of making liquid smoke from empty palm trunks and its use as a biopesticide, as well as several textbooks.

Dean of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment of IPB, Dr. Naresworo Nugroho, presented the results of research on the multi-benefits of bamboo as one type of non-timber forest product (NTFP) commodity, with the theme “Bamboo Innovation as an Environmentally Sound Construction Material.” Meanwhile, Dr. Sigit Sunarta explained the research development at the Forestry Campus of Universitas Gadjah Mada, especially regarding the intricacies of liquid smoke as a superior product. On the last occasion, Dr. Rudi Hartono presented the development of wood quality improvement modifications with the theme “Impregnation Technology in Improving the Quality of Fast-Growing Wood.” It was further explained that wood impregnation is a wood modification method that aims to change wood properties by making modifications at the wood cell wall level.

The BIAWAK Series #5 webinar was hosted by Dr. Apri Heri Iswanto (Senior Researcher of Pusaka JATI-USU). The material and its interesting delivery made the participants enthusiastic about participating in this event until the end. Participants also asked a lot of questions addressed to all speakers.

As usual, at the end of the event, the door prize winners were announced based on the best questions submitted at the webinar. On this occasion, Mr. Rudi Dungani and Mr. Malik were the lucky winners. The door prize will be sent to each winner’s address.
