USU encourages master's and doctoral students to publish internationally, boosting research productivity through discovery and invention innovations.

Medan, USU – Several factors make research publications less impactful, including: (1) publications still written in Indonesian, and (2) publications limited to Indonesian or even local audiences. According to regulations from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), a paper from a seminar, symposium, or conference is considered national if the organizing committee comprises members from five Indonesian universities. For international status, the committee must include five universities, with four from abroad and one from Indonesia.

This was conveyed by the Vice Rector III of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Drs. Mahyuddin, M.I.T., Ph.D., during the Socialization of Publication Obligations for Master’s and Doctoral Students event held on June 4, 2016, in the Senate Meeting Room of BPA USU.

Drs. Mahyuddin explained that master’s and doctoral students must now produce innovations, either as discoveries or inventions. A discovery refers to something that already exists but has not been deeply understood, while an invention refers to something entirely new, discovered through research. Discovery-based research is typically conducted by master’s students, while invention-based research is carried out by doctoral students.

He also emphasized the importance of originality in research. Researchers must demonstrate that their work is genuinely their own and not plagiarized. One way to prove authenticity is by publishing their research. “This is why we are here—to provide guidance for master’s and doctoral students at Universitas Sumatera Utara on the importance of research publication,” he said.

The event featured Dr. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., from USU’s Faculty of Engineering, who also serves as the Head of USU’s Scientific Publication Commission (KPI) and an international research reviewer. He encouraged students to actively engage in research and contribute to society. “What is the use of having a high degree if it does not contribute to societal development?” he remarked to an audience of approximately 500 participants.

Dr. Himsar also explained the importance of proceedings as an initial step in international scientific publication. “Proceedings are not just ordinary publication training but a way to establish our name in the international arena,” he stated.

According to the data presented, USU’s productivity in Scopus-indexed publications has significantly increased, surpassing 70 (on a scale of 0-80) in recent years. However, the total number of USU’s scientific publications from 1971 to 2016 remains below Universitas Andalas (UNAND) and significantly behind Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), which has achieved 5,000 publications.

As a solution, Dr. Himsar proposed several recommendations, including requiring lecturers to write, mandating students to publish their research, and organizing indexed international conferences. In 2016, USU hosted several indexed international conferences, such as ICOSOP for social sciences, PHICo for health sciences, and ICCAI for informatics and engineering.
