Through USU Peduli, lecturers and students of Universitas Sumatera Utara directly visited flash flood-affected areas in Langkat Regency and Aceh Tamiang. Residents still urgently need clean water, ready-to-eat meals, basic necessities, school supplies, and temporary shelters.
FORESTRY PR — Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) once again demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian action through the USU Peduli movement. Lecturers from the Faculty of Forestry, together with students, directly visited areas affected by flash floods in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, and Aceh Tamiang Regency, Aceh, to assist residents while monitoring post-disaster field conditions.
This humanitarian activity involved a lecturer from the Faculty of Forestry USU, Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha, S.Hut., M.Si., along with students who are members of USU Peduli. The action was carried out as the impact of the flash floods in several areas remains severe and requires immediate response.
Based on field observations conducted by the USU Peduli team, several areas in Tanjung Pura and Padang Tualang Subdistricts, Langkat Regency, remain inundated by floodwaters. These conditions have significantly affected residents’ daily activities and caused damage to various public facilities, particularly educational infrastructure.
“Residents are still in urgent need of clean water, ready-to-eat food, and basic necessities. In addition, many schools have been affected and require repairs. School children also need assistance in the form of uniforms, stationery, and school bags so that learning activities can resume,” said Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha, S.Hut., M.Si., when met at the activity site.
Meanwhile, conditions in Aceh Tamiang Regency were reported to be far more concerning. Uneven distribution of aid has forced some residents to directly ask volunteers for food. Thousands of houses have reportedly been heavily damaged or destroyed, and many residents are still living in emergency tents with limited facilities.
This humanitarian action is part of the USU Peduli commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly community service, while also strengthening the role of universities as strategic partners in disaster response and social recovery.
