The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Workshop on Updating the Undergraduate Forestry Curriculum to strengthen an adaptive and relevant OBE- and MBKM-based curriculum that supports ASIIN international accreditation. This activity serves as a strategic step toward globally competitive forestry education that has real impacts on society and environmental sustainability.

HUMAS FAHUTAN — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Workshop on Updating the Undergraduate Forestry Curriculum as a strategic step to strengthen an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM)-based curriculum. The activity aimed to ensure that the forestry curriculum remains adaptive to the development of science, technology, and the needs of the workforce and society.

The workshop was held both online and in the Faculty of Forestry’s Meeting Room, attended by faculty leaders, lecturers, academic staff, and representatives of external stakeholders. The event featured several experienced speakers in forestry education, including Dr. Nurul Qomar, S.Hut., M.P. (Secretary-General of FOReTIKA); M. Indra Kurnia, S.Hut. (Director of Conservation YOSL–OIC); Prof. Dr. Dwi Suryanto, M.Sc. (Head of the Curriculum and Learning Innovation Institute – LINKUP USU); and Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Undergraduate Forestry Study Program, USU).

In his remarks, the Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., emphasized that this activity is an important momentum to review the curriculum to ensure it remains relevant to global dynamics and the direction of national education policies.

“The USU Faculty of Forestry has currently obtained international accreditation from ASIIN for one year, and in May we will strive to extend it to five years. This activity is a strategic step to ensure that our curriculum is not only academically excellent but also creates real impacts on society and the environment,” said Prof. Rudi.

He also added that curriculum renewal is part of continuous efforts to produce competitive graduates with strong awareness of sustainable forest resource management.

“The curriculum must be adaptive to the changing times — in the context of technology, environment, and societal needs. However, sustainable forestry values and local wisdom must remain the main foundation,” he added.

During the workshop, participants actively provided constructive input for curriculum improvement, including strengthening environmental literacy, enhancing soft skills, digital competencies, and students’ entrepreneurial abilities. The focus of the update was also directed toward integrating OBE and MBKM principles to make learning more applicable and relevant to the challenges of the modern forestry industry.

This activity reflects the USU Faculty of Forestry’s commitment to continuously innovating in delivering impactful higher education focused on environmental sustainability. Through collaboration among universities, conservation institutions, and the forestry industry, the faculty is determined to produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also capable of becoming agents of change in sustainable tropical forest management in Indonesia.

With the implementation of this workshop, the USU Faculty of Forestry reaffirms its role as an excellent and globally competitive center of forestry education and research, in line with the spirit of “Diktisaintek Berdampak” promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
