The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Workshop on Updating the Curriculum of the Master’s Program in Forestry with the theme “Locally Excellent and Globally Impactful Curriculum” on Thursday, October 23, 2025, virtually via Zoom Meeting. This activity serves as a strategic step in designing an adaptive curriculum that is globally competitive and relevant to current forestry challenges.

FORESTRY PR - The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), continues its commitment to improving the quality of education by holding a Workshop on Updating the Curriculum of the Master’s Program in Forestry on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The event carried the theme “Locally Excellent and Globally Impactful Curriculum” and featured academic experts and forestry practitioners as speakers.

The workshop was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of a curriculum that is not only academically relevant but also responsive to the needs of the industry, society, and global forestry policies.

Four speakers contributed to shaping the new direction of the curriculum:

  • Dr. Ing. Ir. Ikhwansyah Isranuri (Manager of International Accreditation, BP USU),

  • Ir. Tomy Listyanto, S.Hut., M.Env., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Master’s Program in Forestry Science, Gadjah Mada University),

  • Moch. Farid Januardi, S.Hut., M.BA. (Head of Perhutani Forestry Institute/PEFI), and

  • Dr. Ir. Samsuri, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Master’s Program in Forestry, USU).

During the discussion, the speakers agreed that the Master’s Program in Forestry at USU should be directed toward producing professional graduates who are adaptive to global changes and highly competitive. The updated curriculum focuses on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), integration of research and industrial internships, and strengthening Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values.

Dr. Samsuri added that the new curriculum will be designed to be completed within 18 months or three semesters, with a total of 38 credits. “We aim to produce master’s graduates who are competent, resilient, and capable of contributing directly to sustainable forest management,” he stated.

Through this workshop, the USU Faculty of Forestry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its position as a leading center of tropical forestry education in Sumatra and to contributing to the advancement of forestry science at both national and international levels.
