The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held three Teaching Practitioner sessions for the Forestry Policy and Regulation course in May 2025. Featuring Ismail, S.Hut., M.A. from Leuser Conservation Partnership (LCP), the sessions addressed key topics such as FOLU Net Sink 2030, REDD, timber trade legality through FLEGT and SVLK, and global forest governance dynamics.

HUMAS FAHUTAN — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), successfully held a series of Guest Practitioner lectures for the "Forestry Policy and Regulation" course over three consecutive weeks, on May 17, 24, and 31, 2025. The sessions featured speaker Ismail, S.Hut., M.A., Executive Director of Leuser Conservation Partnership (LCP), who shared practical insights on forestry policy from both national and global perspectives.

The first session, held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, focused on “FOLU Net Sink 2030, Climate Change, and REDD”. Ismail emphasized that the FOLU Net Sink 2030 program is Indonesia’s strategic commitment under the Paris Agreement, aiming for the forestry sector to absorb more carbon emissions than it emits. REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) was highlighted as a key approach supporting this goal, with emphasis on conservation and enhancing forest carbon stocks.

The second session on Saturday, May 24, 2025, discussed “Forest Product Trade Policy (FLEGT & SVLK)”. Ismail elaborated on the significance of Indonesia’s Timber Legality Assurance System (SVLK) which supports the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT) agreement with the European Union. He explained that beyond compliance with international trade standards, SVLK enhances the credibility and competitiveness of Indonesian timber products. Although implementation challenges remain—such as certification access and capacity gaps—the long-term benefits for businesses and conservation efforts are substantial.

The final session, held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, examined “Politics and Global Forest Governance Issues.” Ismail underscored that forest management is deeply influenced by global political dynamics and international agreements, given the crucial role forests play in addressing climate crises, biodiversity loss, and global ecosystem sustainability. He also outlined the history of international attention to forestry, from the Stockholm Conference (1972) to the Rio Declaration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1992).

These three sessions were facilitated by course instructor Dr. Ir. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc., and formed part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. This initiative fosters collaboration between academic institutions and practitioners, enriching students’ understanding with relevant and contextual real-world insights.

Through this collaboration, the Faculty of Forestry USU not only delivers theoretical knowledge but also provides direct exposure to forestry policymakers, enhancing graduates’ competencies in addressing both national and global forestry challenges.
