USU Faculty of Forestry Community Service team conducted community service activity in Rumah Sumbul Village with the main activity “Assistance in Developing Sugar House Tourism and Providing Palm Sugar Processing Equipment”, which was held on Tuesday, 15th August 2023 at the Rumah Sumbul Village Office, and on Saturday, 2nd September 2023 at Jaman Sembiring’s palm sugar processing in Rumah Sumbul Village.
The palm processing machine assistance activity is part of the Village Development of the Community Service and Empowerment Team (PPM) of the USU Faculty of Forestry with the leader of Dr. Oding Affandi. Other community service team members are Dr. Bejo Slamet, Dr. Ridwanti Batubara, Harisyah Manurung S.Hut., M.Si., and Dr. Luthfi Hakim.
The handover of the palm sugar processing equipment was held on 15th August 2023 at the Rumah Sumbul Village Office. Some of the other equipment provided were sugar stirrers, sieves, pots, bowls, plates, spoons, cups, kettles, and trays, all made of aluminum. Those who attended the event were the entire USU community service Team, Rumah Sumbul Village Head, Sobiran Sembiring, village government officials, and community leaders, as well as students participating in Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM).
The people of Rumah Sumbul Village have many palm trees that produce nira that can be processed into palm sugar. However, after being harvested by the owner, the water is sold to be used as a drink in the form of palm wine.
According to the Head of Rumah Sumbul Village, Sobiran Sembiring, there are several factors that cause the community not to process the nira water into palm sugar, including that processing takes a long time, requires adequate equipment to produce good palm sugar, and requires time to sell it to the market so that the selling price is higher.
The assistance of palm sugar processing equipment will greatly help the community in making palm sugar. Moreover, palm sugar from this village has good quality and is pure without any mixture of other ingredients, which if developed properly, will become a typical product from Rumah Sumbul Village as well as a souvenir for people who come to travel.
