The 4th ICONART 2022 Conference at USU, supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, featured keynote speakers from 5 countries. Topics focused on biodiversity, conservation, and mangrove restoration.

The 4th ICONART 2022 Conference has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology as one of the conferences funded in 2022. Additionally, the USU Mangrove Research Center has officially been recognized as a new Center of Excellence for Higher Education in 2022.


The conference, which was officially opened online by the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Si., M.Si., featured keynote speakers from five countries. In his opening remarks, the Rector stated that the 4th ICONART 2022 aligns closely with USU's vision to be an internationally recognized university with a strong local identity. This conference also supports USU's tagline, Transformation Toward Ultimate, which reflects its internationalization efforts toward becoming a World-Class University. This vision is implemented through teaching, research, and community service integrated with excellence in TALENTA fields.


The Chairperson of ICONART 2022, Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, reported that the committee received 141 papers from several countries, including the Philippines, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Indonesia. These papers will be selected for publication in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science.


During the morning plenary session, two keynote speakers delivered their presentations: Prof. Dr. Tadashi Kajita from the University of the Ryukyus, Japan, who presented on International Research for Studying Fish and Macro-Benthos Diversity in Mangrove Ecosystems Using eDNA Metabarcoding, and Dr. Sigit D. Sasmito from the National University of Singapore, Singapore, who discussed Mangrove Conservation and Restoration to Achieve Indonesia's Climate Action Targets.


In the afternoon plenary session, three more keynote speakers took the stage: Lubos Kristak, Ph.D., from the University of Zvolen, Slovakia; Prof. Petar Antov from the University of Forestry Sofia, Bulgaria; and Arif Nuryawan, Ph.D., from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. Both offline and online participants remained highly engaged throughout the discussions.


The 4th ICONART 2022 Conference officially concluded at 5:30 PM, marked by closing remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Rudi Hartono.
