USU Public Relations – The Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hosted the "Socialization of Indonesia’s FoLU Net Sink 2030 Regional Sumatera" event, organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). This significant event took place on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at the Gelanggang Mahasiswa Building, USU, and was conducted in a hybrid format, accommodating 200 on-site participants and up to 1,000 online participants. The event was held in collaboration with the Forum of Leaders of Higher Forestry Education Institutions in Indonesia (FOReTIKA).
This socialization is part of a series spanning six regions: Banten, West Java, and Central Java at Bogor (IPB) on Monday, June 20, 2022; Sumatra in Medan (USU); East Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara at Yogyakarta (UGM) on Monday, June 27, 2022; Maluku and Papua at Manokwari (UNIPA) on Thursday, June 30, 2022; Sulawesi at Makassar (UNHAS) on Monday, July 4, 2022; and Kalimantan at Banjarbaru (UNLAM) on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
The Medan event featured distinguished attendees, including the Acting Director-General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management (PKTL) and Daily Chairperson of Indonesia’s FoLU Net Sink 2030, Dr. Ir. Ruandha Agung Sugardiman, M.Sc.; the Governor of North Sumatra, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Edy Rahmayadi, represented by Arief S. Trinugroho, Assistant for North Sumatra’s Economy and Development; the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si.; the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at USU, Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM; experts from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, senior officials from forestry agencies, academics, and other invited guests.
Before the event began, participants planted Tabebuya trees (Handroanthus sp.) on the USU Padang Bulan Campus, led by the Acting Director-General of PKTL, the North Sumatra Governor's representative, and the USU Rector. The event was officially opened with a gong ceremony and remarks from the Acting Director-General of PKTL. During the opening, the Acting Director-General presented the Indonesia’s FoLU Net Sink 2030 book to the Rector of USU and the Governor's representative.
The morning session included presentations from leaders of various fields within the FoLU Net Sink 2030 framework. These included Sustainable Forest Management presented by Ir. Misran, M.M.; Carbon Stock Enhancement by Ir. Helmi Basalamah, M.M.; Conservation by Ir. Jefry Susyafrianto, M.M.; Peat Ecosystem Management by Drs. M.R. Karliansyah, M.S.; and Instruments and Information by Ir. Emma Rachmawaty, M.Sc. The session was moderated by Dr. Ir. Belinda A. Margono, Director of Forest Resource Inventory and Monitoring.
In the afternoon session, academics from FOReTIKA provided responses and engaged in discussions. Contributors included representatives from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Jambi, Universitas Lampung, Universitas Lancang Kuning, and Banda Aceh Polytechnic.
Indonesia has shown its serious commitment to addressing climate change through the Indonesia’s FoLU Net Sink 2030 initiative. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the forestry and other land-use sectors by 2030. The discussion concluded with a summary by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at USU, Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM.
