SMKI 2025 brings together young foresters from 48 universities in Medan to discuss climate change, forest governance, FoLU Net Sink 2030, and the future of Indonesian forestry.

FORESTRY PR — Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) once again became a national focal point with the successful implementation of the Indonesian Forestry Student National Seminar (SMKI 2025) on November 6, 2025, at the USU Student Center. More than 48 forestry universities from across Indonesia attended this major forum to discuss the strategic role of the younger generation in addressing the global climate crisis and the future of sustainable forest management. This year's event carried the theme “Forestry of the Future: Collaborative Strategies to Address the Global Climate Crisis.”

The opening of SMKI 2025 was held grandly with the presence of various academic stakeholders and forestry student organizations in Indonesia. Remarks were delivered by: SMKI 2025 Committee Chair Adil Hakim Ritonga, HIMAS Sylva USU President Johanes Nainggolan, Secretary General of Sylva Indonesia Wahyu Agung, Chair of the Representative Council of Sylva Indonesia Agung Wirayudha, Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry Prof. Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., and the representative of the USU Rector, Rahma Yurliani, S.Psi., M.Psi., as Director of the Directorate of Student Achievement and Alumni Relations (Ditmawalumni) USU.

The event grew even more dynamic with the presence of keynote speaker Fahrizal Fitri, S.Hut., M.P., Expert Staff to the Minister of Environment and Forestry, who emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, especially amid the increasingly evident threats of climate change.

“Let us make forests the center of life and Indonesia’s green civilization,” he urged before hundreds of participants.

During the seminar session, national forestry experts, including Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut., M.Si., Professor at the USU Faculty of Forestry, explained the urgency of scientific contributions and precision data to support Indonesia’s climate policies, particularly the achievement of FoLU Net Sink 2030. Young foresters were encouraged to become pioneers of change through innovation, capacity building, and strengthened environmental awareness.

Meanwhile, Masrizal Saraan, S.Hut., M.Si., Executive Director of PETAI Foundation, highlighted the significant potential of North Sumatra in accessing global climate finance due to its extensive forests and high carbon storage capacity. According to him, strengthening data, institutions, and program readiness is key for the province to advance toward a climate-resilient green economy.

“From readiness to action, North Sumatra is moving toward a climate-resilient green economy,” he stated.

Beyond the seminar, the event was enlivened with the Forestry of Champion competition, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and an educational field trip to the Aek Nauli Elephant Conservation Camp (ANECC). All these activities were designed to strengthen participants’ field experience, national networks, and ecological analytical skills.

The USU Faculty of Forestry reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing forestry human resources who are innovative, adaptive, and globally competitive. The presence of young foresters from across Indonesia serves as strong evidence of the younger generation’s role in sustaining forests and enhancing national climate mitigation efforts.

SMKI 2025 concluded with a powerful call for all participants to become agents of change in their respective regions, strengthening forest conservation actions and boosting Indonesia’s contribution to reducing global emissions. SMKI 2025 stands as an important milestone in preparing future foresters ready to respond to increasingly complex environmental challenges.
