The Rain Forest Student Activity Unit (UKM) of the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), carried out a community service program titled “Green Action” at the Islamic Foundation of MTs Al-Ikhlas, Pantai Buaya Hamlet, Bukit Mas Village, Besitang District, Langkat Regency, from August 28–30, 2026. Carrying the tagline “Love Nature, Save the Future,” the activity reflected students’ commitment to environmental conservation while providing an opportunity to apply forestry knowledge directly within the community.
The activity was attended by 19 members of the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit, who interacted directly with representatives of the foundation, educators, students, and local residents. The Green Action series included environmental education, interactive activities with students, community-based environmental clean-up activities, and tree planting.
A total of 105 tree seedlings were planted during the activity, consisting of 25 sugar palm seedlings, 35 durian seedlings, and 45 mango seedlings. The planting activity is expected not only to provide ecological benefits for the school environment and surrounding community but also to serve as a learning opportunity for the younger generation about the importance of protecting and caring for the environment sustainably.
The highlight of the activity was the tree-planting session, which was officially inaugurated by Bukit Mas Village Head Abdul Wahid. On the occasion, the Head of Pantai Buaya Hamlet also delivered remarks to the participants and community members in attendance.
Support for the Green Action initiative was also expressed by USU alumnus Jefri Wanda. He appreciated the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit’s commitment to tree planting and expressed hope that the knowledge and experience gained through the activity would benefit everyone involved.
Meanwhile, Head of MTs Al-Ikhlas and Rain Forest Student Activity Unit Generation 4 alumnus Abdul Majid Siregar, S.Hut., expressed his gratitude to the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit for selecting the MTs Al-Ikhlas Islamic Foundation as the location for Green Action. According to him, the activity not only benefited the environment but also had the potential to shape students’ character by fostering concern and responsibility for environmental conservation.
The selection of MTs Al-Ikhlas as the activity venue also held special significance for the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit. The foundation is the alma mater of Abdul Majid Siregar, S.Hut., an alumnus of Rain Forest Student Activity Unit Generation 4. This connection forms part of the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit’s longstanding sense of community and family while demonstrating how values of environmental awareness can continue to be passed down from one generation to the next.
Through Green Action, the Rain Forest Student Activity Unit seeks to provide community service that goes beyond tree planting by fostering a shared understanding that environmental protection is the responsibility of every generation. Interaction among students, the school, and the community is expected to nurture sustained environmental awareness while strengthening the role of young people in taking concrete action to conserve nature.
The activity also contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through environmental education for students, SDG 15: Life on Land through tree planting and environmental conservation efforts, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration among students, the school, village government, alumni, and the local community. Green Action demonstrates that education, environmental action, and collaboration can work together to create a more sustainable environment for the future.
