On Sunday, March 3, 2024, mangrove seedling planting was carried out in Nipah Village, Sei Nagalawan Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra.

On Sunday, March 3, 2024, mangrove seedling planting was carried out in Nipah Village, Sei Nagalawan Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. This activity involved various parties including local communities, lecturers, and staff employees of the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara. More than 100 mangrove seedlings were successfully planted on empty land formed due to coastal abrasion that occurred in recent times.


This planting action is a form of implementation of community service activities (PPM) as well as social gathering women’s dharma Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara. In addition to preserving the environment, this activity is also a moment of intimacy and friendship ahead of the month of Ramadan in 2024.

 

Nipah Village is one of the assisted village locations and has been a target location for USU's PPM for the last few years. Nipah Village is considered very potential in various aspects, including tourism, natural resources, and marine products. Therefore, development and guidance are important in supporting the progress and marketing of the natural potential in the village. The involvement of the university, especially the USU Faculty of Forestry, is expected to realize a sustainable environment, which is also an important aspect of supporting the economy of the surrounding community. 

The Dean of the USU Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si. strongly supported this activity and expressed his high appreciation to all parties involved. In his speech, Dr. Rudi Hartono mentioned that this activity is one of the positive things, where the benefits can be directly felt by the community, not only now but in the long term. The same thing was also expressed by Vice Dean 3 of Fahutan USU as well as the chief executive of the activity, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Purwoko in his speech. In this activity also attended Dr. Meutia Nauly, S.Psi., M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Darma Bakti, M.S. who represented LPPM USU and DGB USU.

 


 

In addition to planting, environmental awareness education for children was also carried out in this activity. Environmental awareness education presented by Dr. Kansih Sri Hartini, S.Hut., M.P. with the theme "The Important Role of Mangroves" is expected to spark the enthusiasm of children to play an active role in maintaining and realizing mangrove sustainability through simple things.
