Luhut Panjaitan discusses development strategies based on law, politics, and security in a public lecture at Universitas Sumatera Utara.

Medan—USU: Building a region, especially North Sumatra, requires strong teamwork. The same principle applies to the Academic Community of Universitas Sumatera Utara, which needs solid collaboration to improve further.

This statement was delivered by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) General (Ret.) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan in a public lecture titled "Region Development Based on Law, Politics, and Security." The event, held on Monday, July 25, 2016, at the Gelanggang Mahasiswa USU building, ran smoothly and was attended by the Universitas Sumatera Utara Academic Community.

The lecture was attended by USU Rector Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum.; USU Vice Rector II Dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked (OG), SpOG(K); Director of the Postgraduate School Prof. Robert Sibarani, M.S.; representatives of the North Sumatra Provincial Government; members of the USU Board of Trustees; members of the USU Academic Senate; Chairman of the USU Council of Professors; USU alumni; and USU postgraduate students.

During the lecture, Luhut Panjaitan elaborated on government strategies for development, including equitable development, especially outside Java Island; improving competitiveness; and industrial-based commodity transformation.

“One strategy is allocating funds for village development,” Luhut explained. “According to data, the annual allocation has steadily increased: IDR 0.7 billion in 2015, IDR 1.2 billion in 2016, an estimated IDR 1.7 billion in 2017, and IDR 2.3 billion in 2018. This allocation significantly reduces poverty in villages by enabling them to develop their potential and local wisdom. President Jokowi emphasized that equitable development must benefit all regions, not just Java.”

Luhut also addressed the ongoing Tax Amnesty program. “The goal is to build a tax database, increase 2016 tax revenues, and strengthen tax IT systems. Achieving these goals will allow the government to lower tax rates and enhance tax law enforcement,” he explained.

He further defined Tax Amnesty as eliminating owed taxes without administrative or criminal penalties, provided taxpayers disclose their assets and pay a redemption fee as stipulated by law.

USU Rector Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., expressed his gratitude to Luhut Panjaitan. “We sincerely thank the Minister for taking the time to deliver this enlightening lecture for the Universitas Sumatera Utara Academic Community. Let’s follow this lecture attentively to gain maximum benefits,” the Rector said.
