The Center of Excellence for Bamboo Science and Technology (PUI-Bamboo) Universitas Sumatera Utara held its first international conference discussing the role of bamboo and forestry resources in climate change adaptation and mitigation, featuring speakers from various countries and opening opportunities for global research.

FHUT PR – The Center of Excellence for Bamboo Science and Technology (PUI-Bamboo), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized The 1st International Conference on Bamboo, Forestry Resources, and Application (IC-BaFoRa) 2025 on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, under the theme “Bamboo and Forestry for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.” The conference, held at Grandhika Hotel Medan, featured keynote speakers from Malaysia, China, India, and Indonesia, along with research paper presentations from six study areas related to bamboo and forestry.

In her remarks, USU Vice Rector III, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, emphasized the importance of bamboo as a rapidly renewable natural resource with strategic roles in carbon sequestration, erosion prevention, and as a wood substitute. She also highlighted bamboo’s potential in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering opportunities for international research collaboration.

“Bamboo offers real solutions in addressing climate change while empowering local economies. We hope this conference will generate policy recommendations, business innovations, and empowerment programs with broad impacts,” she said.

Chairman of IC-BaFoRa 2025 and Head of PUI-Bamboo USU, Dr. Ir. Samsuri, stated that bamboo has great potential in supporting the national target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. “With its rapid growth, bamboo can serve as an alternative to increasingly scarce timber, as well as for construction materials and biopharmaceuticals,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Secretary of PUI-Bamboo USU, Dr. Ir. Luthfi Hakim, added that data on bamboo distribution in Indonesia remains limited. “Further research is urgently needed to optimize bamboo utilization and deliver economic benefits, especially for rural communities,” he said.

The conference will also publish proceedings through IOP Publishing, with selected articles to be published in Scopus-indexed journals, as part of efforts to strengthen bamboo research globally.

IC-BaFoRa 2025 marks an important milestone in elevating bamboo as a sustainable solution for climate change mitigation while advancing the development of bamboo science and technology in Indonesia and worldwide.
