Medan-USU: The French government, through its ambassador Corinne Breuze, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening educational collaboration with Indonesia. This commitment was marked by the 7th Joint Working Group Indonesia-France held at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) on Monday (March 9). Corinne stated that the French government would support research development at USU, particularly in the fields of health (medicine) and engineering. This was conveyed during a press conference after the opening of the two-day event (March 9-10) themed "How Education and Research Respond to Sustainable Development?" held at the IMT-GT Room, USU Rectorate Bureau. The event was attended by representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, led by Prof. Ir. Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, MSEE, Ph.D, USU Rector Prof. Dr. dr. Syahril Pasaribu, IFI Director Bertrand de Hartingh, representatives of the Mayor of Medan Drs. Hasan Basri, MM, and several university leaders from both Indonesia and France.
USU’s Vice Rector IV, Prof. Ningrum Natsya Sirait, highlighted France’s keen interest in collaborating with USU’s Teaching Hospital under the Faculty of Medicine, particularly in tropical disease research. She clarified that the partnership will emphasize scientific research rather than hospital operations. "France has outstanding scientists and researchers. We are currently exploring priorities that can be collaborated on, and once identified, we will move forward with implementation," she said. Prof. Hermawan also mentioned that the collaboration extends to cultural exchanges, joint degree programs, double degrees, collaborative research, and student and faculty exchanges. Ambassador Corinne expressed hope that this initiative would increase the interest of Indonesian students in pursuing studies in France, which already hosts approximately 1,500 Indonesian students. Popular fields of study include engineering, natural sciences, health, and trade management, supported by scholarships from both countries.
