The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), marked a proud achievement with the inauguration of four lecturers as permanent professors. This inauguration reaffirms the faculty’s commitment to strengthening sustainable forestry research and innovation toward an impactful research university.

FORESTRY PR – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), achieved another remarkable accomplishment with the inauguration of four lecturers as permanent professors. They are Prof. Dr. Budi Utomo, S.P., M.P.; Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si.; Prof. Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM.; and Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhdi, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng.

The four professors were inaugurated together with one lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology during the Inauguration Ceremony of Professors at Universitas Sumatera Utara, held at the USU Student Hall on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. This inauguration marks the significant contribution of the Faculty of Forestry in supporting USU’s transformation into an impactful research university.

In his remarks, USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., expressed appreciation and emphasized the strategic role of professors in strengthening innovation within the university’s three pillars of higher education (Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi).

“Every professor must become a center of integrative Tridharma innovation. A university must serve as a neutral and interdisciplinary space for thought,” stated the USU Rector.

Prof. Muryanto also added that in 2025, USU had submitted 56 professor proposals, with 16 decrees (SK) already issued. To date, 230 USU lecturers hold the title of Professor, with 223 of them officially inaugurated as members of the Professors Council.

In their inaugural speeches, the four professors from the Faculty of Forestry presented research works that directly contribute to sustainable forest management and the advancement of forestry science in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Budi Utomo, S.P., M.P., discussed the Science and Technology Approaches in Forest Rehabilitation and Restoration, highlighting the importance of applying scientific and technological methods in ecosystem recovery, especially in the Lake Toba watershed area.

“Reforestation is not only about growing trees, but also about growing the future,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., emphasized the application of genomics-based precision forestry and biodiversity for adaptive forest management in the face of climate change.

Prof. Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., IPM., presented innovations in bamboo material engineering through wood modification technology, which has the potential to produce eco-friendly, high-value products.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhdi, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng., highlighted environmentally friendly forest harvesting practices as a key step toward sustainable production forest management.

These research works illustrate the important role of the USU Faculty of Forestry in supporting national policies related to environmental conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable green development.

The inauguration of these four professors marks a significant milestone for the USU Faculty of Forestry in strengthening its academic and research capacity. The faculty remains committed to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding research networks, and producing innovations that make a positive impact on both society and the environment.
