Forestry Silviculture specialization students (Class of 2024) from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (Fahutan USU), conducted an academic field trip to the Toba Nursery located on Motung–Sibisa Road, Motung Village, Ajibata District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra, on Friday, October 16, 2026. This activity offered students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of nursery management systems and plant propagation techniques.

Accompanied by course instructor Prof. Dr. Ir. Yunasfi, the student delegation was officially welcomed by the management of Toba Nursery. Through the site visit, students gained direct insights into seedling production workflows, plant maintenance protocols, and advanced nursery technology applications aimed at supporting reforestation and environmental greening initiatives.
Throughout the visit, students were briefed on the background and development of the Toba Nursery and toured various specialized infrastructure units, including:
Germination House Area
Shaded House Area
Open Area
Mother Plant House
Acclimatization House Area
Additionally, students examined various seedling varieties integrated into Indonesia's Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 program, alongside observing practical applications in tissue culture, rooting house management, and production facilities.

Learning proceeded through direct field observations and interactive Q&A sessions with nursery managers. This hands-on interaction enabled students to bridge theoretical classroom concepts with operational field practices while grasping the necessity of precision across every propagation stage to yield high-quality seedlings. As part of an effort to support campus greening initiatives, students were also provided with seedlings to plant within the Fahutan USU campus environment. The field trip was designed to enrich academic exposure while encouraging student engagement in forest resource stewardship and ecological sustainability.

This field trip initiative directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goals SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential field-based learning and competency development, SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by supporting reforestation, forest rehabilitation, and sustainable ecosystem management.
