USU Forestry Program 2024 Field Trip: Hands-on practice of survival techniques and field skills, equipping students for campus life and beyond.

A total of 177 students from the 2022 batch of the Forestry Program, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (Fahutan USU), along with 25 field assistants and 4 lecturers of the BKRTS course, participated in a field trip. The trip was held over three days, from March 8-10, 2024, in Timbang Lawan Village, Bohorok Subdistrict, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra.

The departure ceremony was officially launched by the Vice Dean 1 of the Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ir. Alfan Gunawan Ahmad. This year’s field trip theme was “Don’t Give Up, We’re Always With You.”

The field trip is an implementation of project-based learning (PBL) and the case method (CM) for the course. The materials taught include both hard and soft skills through hands-on field practice. Topics covered include, among others, the principles of forestry in daily life, survival terrain recognition and cooking techniques, building shelters and appropriate behavior in survival conditions, identifying and consuming food and water for survival, nature interpretation, jungle tracking techniques, and gaining insights from field practices.

All activities ran smoothly and safely. Participants also gained new knowledge and experiences as preparation for their campus and community life, embodying the strong esprit de corps of foresters. With this activity, it is hoped that students can apply the principles of living and surviving, which will be highly beneficial for society in critical moments.
