“Make the most of this Field Work Practice opportunity to learn directly from practitioners and field managers. Absorb as much knowledge as possible, uphold the reputation of the alma mater, and demonstrate professional attitudes wherever you are placed,” he advised all participants.

HUMAS FAHUTAN – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Field Work Practice (Praktik Kerja Lapang/PKL) Preparation Program for students on June 13 and 15, 2026, at the Faculty of Forestry USU. The activity was organized to prepare students before they enter the field to carry out their Field Work Practice in various institutions and companies operating in the forestry sector.

The program was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Dr. Tito Sucipto. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of the preparation program as a means of strengthening students’ understanding of the conditions and dynamics of the forestry work environment.

Dr. Tito Sucipto expressed hope that all materials delivered by the resource persons would be well understood and absorbed by the participants, so they could serve as valuable preparation during their Field Work Practice. He also reminded students to always maintain their health and safety, as well as uphold ethics and manners while at their PKL locations.

“Make the most of this Field Work Practice opportunity to learn directly from practitioners and field managers. Absorb as much knowledge as possible, uphold the reputation of the alma mater, and demonstrate professional attitudes wherever you are placed,” he said to all participants.

Following the opening session, the program continued with presentations from speakers representing various forestry sectors. The materials covered topics such as industrial plantation forest management, conservation area management, and operational and managerial practices in forestry companies. These topics were designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of different sectors and career opportunities in forestry.

Through this preparation session, students gained insights into the current conditions of forest resource management, field challenges, and the competencies required to work professionally in the forestry sector. The interaction between participants and speakers also provided opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of the real-world work environment they will encounter during their PKL.

The program continued on Monday, June 15, 2026, with additional material sessions from the speakers. The entire series of activities concluded with a preparatory examination aimed at assessing students’ understanding of the materials delivered throughout the program.

Through this preparation program, the Faculty of Forestry USU hopes that students will have adequate academic, technical, and mental readiness before carrying out their Field Work Practice. The PKL activity is expected to serve as a platform for students to apply the knowledge gained during their studies, broaden their professional perspectives, and enhance their competencies as future forestry graduates ready to face the challenges of the workforce and sustainable forestry development.

The implementation of this Field Work Practice Preparation Program also aligns with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 4, namely Quality Education. Through this program, which involves academics and practitioners from various forestry fields, students are provided with opportunities to strengthen both academic competencies and practical skills relevant to workforce needs.

This activity reflects the Faculty of Forestry USU’s commitment to providing inclusive, applied, and competency-based learning experiences. The program not only equips students with technical knowledge in forest resource management but also instills professionalism, work ethics, and adaptability to field challenges. By integrating classroom theory with real-world field experience during PKL, students are expected to develop lifelong learning competencies and improve their readiness for professional careers. Ultimately, this program serves as a concrete implementation of SDG 4 in delivering high-quality higher education that is relevant, impactful, and capable of producing competitive graduates who contribute to sustainable forestry development.
