USU Faculty of Forestry students and lecturers joined the 2019 Forestry Camp in Malaysia, enhancing forestry knowledge and exploring international collaboration. The event focused on climate change and young foresters.

The Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve in Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia, was vibrant with the presence of over a hundred students and lecturers wearing yellow helmets. They engaged in activities at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)’s Sultan Idris Shah Forestry Education Center (SISFEC), a forestry education center inaugurated by the Sultan of Selangor in 2012.

A total of 154 students from various universities participated in the 2019 Forestry Camp, held from June 30 to July 13, 2019. Among the participants were three students and two lecturers from the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). The students, M. Khbir Tanjung, Anggara Ridho Putra, and Tb. Mardongan, were accompanied by Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Forestry, and Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha, S.Hut., M.Si., Head of the Department of Forest Resource Conservation.

For USU, this was its first participation in the annual event, which serves as a platform for foresters from different nations to gather. Alongside USU, four other Indonesian universities joined the camp: Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Mataram, and Institut Pertanian Bogor. Each institution sent four students and two lecturers to collaborate with UPM’s Faculty of Forestry students and lecturers.

The 2019 Forestry Camp carried the theme “Combating Climate Change Through Young Foresters”. The event was designed as practical training, featuring foundational forestry science modules such as Forest Survival and Adventure Challenges, Forest Product, and Forest for Future. In addition to broadening students’ understanding of forest ecosystems, forest products, and their utilization, the program aimed to instill positive character traits, including independence, creativity, sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, empathy, unity, and other values.

USU’s accompanying lecturers also held discussions on managing SISFEC as an educational forest and visited UPM’s Faculty of Forestry in Selangor to explore potential collaborations. It is hoped that USU’s participation in the 2019 Forestry Camp will enhance its international reputation and expand its network of forestry institutions.
