The Faculty of Forestry Universitas Sumatera Utara received a visit from the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Agency to discuss the development plan for a Biodiversity Park (Taman Kehati) as a sustainable educational and conservation area that supports biodiversity preservation and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

FAHUTAN PUBLIC RELATIONS — The Faculty of Forestry Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) received a visit from the Protection, Law Enforcement, and Capacity Building Division Team of the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Agency on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, to discuss the follow-up plan for the development of a Biodiversity Park (Taman Keanekaragaman Hayati or Taman Kehati) as part of the North Sumatra Provincial Strategic Project.

The PPHPK team from the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Agency attending the meeting consisted of Pangeran Martin Butarbutar, Reinheart DMT Simaramata, and Mea Fitri Kartika Sari. The delegation was welcomed directly by the Vice Dean for Administration, Finance, Human Resources, and Academic Infrastructure of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Luthfi Hakim.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the development plan for the Biodiversity Park, which is expected to become a strategic area supporting biodiversity conservation in North Sumatra while also strengthening educational and environmental conservation functions.

Based on the results of the initial survey, the Faculty of Forestry USU area was considered to have excellent potential for the development of the Biodiversity Park due to its representative environmental conditions, educational functions, and the faculty’s strategic role in forestry and environmental management.

In addition to serving as a conservation area, the Biodiversity Park is also expected to become an applied learning space for students, researchers, and the wider community in supporting the advancement of forestry science, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable environmental management.

This development plan is also aligned with the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the strengthening of environmental education, the development of conservation-based green infrastructure, biodiversity preservation, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

As a follow-up, the Faculty of Forestry USU and the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Agency will conduct further discussions regarding cooperation schemes, implementation mechanisms, and the future stages of Biodiversity Park development.

Through this collaboration, the Biodiversity Park is expected to become an educational conservation area that not only supports environmental preservation but also provides academic, social, and ecological benefits for the wider community.
