Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) collaborated with the women’s PKK group of Simalingkar A Village in a goose farming program as an effort to support food security and empower family economies at the village level.

PR FHUT – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), together with PKK Simalingkar A Village, held a goose farming extension program on Saturday, September 13, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen food security and improve community welfare. The activity, held at the Village Hall Office, was led by Dr. Ir. Pindi Patana, S.Hut, M.Sc., who also chaired the USU community service team.

Simalingkar A Village was chosen as the activity location because it is administratively part of USU Bekala Campus 2 and has natural potential that supports agricultural development. This program aligns with the government’s efforts to strengthen national food security.

During the session, Ir. R. Edhy Mirwandono, M.Si., M.P., IPM, ASEAN Eng., a lecturer from the USU Faculty of Agriculture, explained goose farming techniques that are relatively easy and profitable. “Geese have advantages, including their loud voices that can serve as natural guards, and their ability to utilize natural feed such as grass,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Agus Purwoko, S.Hut, M.Si., from the Faculty of Forestry emphasized the importance of using household organic waste as livestock feed. “Using organic waste not only reduces production costs but also helps address environmental issues,” he explained. He added that utilizing home yards for goose farming could support food security while increasing family income.

Beyond food security, goose farming also has potential for development as an agro-tourism attraction. Dr. Pindi Patana stated that the area around USU’s Bekala Forestry Campus has characteristics suitable for agro-tourism development, including natural basins that can serve as ponds. This effort supports the campus vision as a green campus and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This activity was also directed to support several SDGs, such as poverty alleviation (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), gender equality (SDG 5), and life on land (SDG 15).

At the end of the event, Lukman Hakim, S.Si., M.Si., from the Faculty of Vocational Studies, emphasized the importance of establishing livestock group institutions so that partnerships between USU and village communities can be sustainable and provide maximum benefits.

Chairperson of PKK Simalingkar A Village, Mrs. Sinta Veronika, welcomed the program positively. “This activity is very relevant to PKK’s mission in improving family welfare, especially for women who have dual roles in earning income,” she said.

With the synergy between USU and PKK, goose farming in Simalingkar A Village is expected to become a model of community empowerment that supports food security and sustainable development at the village level.
