The Center for Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI) Mangroves and the USU Faculty of Forestry carried out international community service (PPM) on September 1-2, 2024. This activity was carried out in two different provinces, namely North Sumatra and Aceh, precisely in the Beras Basah Village Mangrove Forest area and the Langsa Mangrove Forest area. The event, which was held in collaboration with Universitas Prima Indonesia, involved cross-country participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan. This activity was officially opened by Dr. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc as Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Forestry in Beras Basah Village, Pangkalan Susu, Langkat, with the Forest Farmers Group (KTH) Peduli Pesisir. Previously, Dr. Oding Affandi, as the Head of the Committee, explained the history of KTH and the purpose of the service activities to all participants and representatives of KTH Peduli Pesisir who were present. Some of the activities carried out in this service are mangrove planting, direct trigona honey harvesting, fragrant pandanus coconut harvesting, shrimp and crab harvesting, and dragon fruit harvesting. In addition, in this activity that involved foreign participants, all participants and guests present had the opportunity to enjoy various ecotourism tours offered at the location, ranging from tasting various local dishes to enjoying the beautiful scenery of the beautiful mangrove forest.
On the second day, all participants traveled from Beras Basah to Langsa Mangrove Forest, Aceh. There, all participants had the opportunity to see the management of mangrove forests and ecotourism, which has long been built very well. The vastness of the mangrove forest, the fresh air, and the beauty of the scenery on offer never cease to amaze participants. Some interesting facts related to Langsa Mangrove Forest also added to the admiration of all participants, where this mangrove forest area is the largest mangrove forest in Southeast Asia and has received many awards, ranging from the best tourist attractions to top ecotourism brands.
Langsa Mangrove Forest has various facilities that can be enjoyed by all visitors, including, aesthetic permanent walking paths, beautiful bridges that adopt European concepts, traditional wooden bridges, comfortable toilets and prayer rooms, canteens, and viewing towers that will bring visitors to view the vast green mangrove forest at a height of up to 45 meters.
