USU Forestry students joined the UPM Summer Camp 2023, exploring forestry and soft skills. This international collaboration enhances student competencies

Three students from the Forestry Study Program at the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), participated in the Summer Camp 2023 held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) from August 6-19, 2023. The event took place at the Sultan Idris Shah Forest Education Center (SISFEC), Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.

The three students were Daniel Rolex Partogi Napitu (NIM 211201210/MNH), Syafiqah Rizqy Utami Rangkuti (NIM 211201228/KSH), and Putri Honey Miftasya (NIM 201201047/THH). They were accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Dr. Ir. Rudi Hartono, Vice Dean I, Dr. Alfan Gunawan Ahmad, and the Head of the Forestry Study Program, Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto. In addition to accompanying the students, the lecturers engaged in collaborations with the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (FHAS) UPM and the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Product (INTROP) UPM.

The Summer Camp, also known as Kem Perhutanan, is an annual program that serves as a mandatory course at FHAS UPM, coded FHS4904. This year, approximately 120 students participated, including 22 from Indonesia, representing Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), IPB University, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), and Universitas Mataram (Unram).

In his opening remarks, the Dean of FHAS UPM, Prof. Dr. Hazandy Abdul Hamid, expressed gratitude for the participation of students from Indonesia and hoped that such collaborations could continue in the future. This Summer Camp marks the 48th event since its inception in 1973, two years after the establishment of UPM’s Faculty of Forestry. The Vice Dean of FHAS UPM, Prof. Madya Dr. Kamziah Abd. Kudus, added that this year’s camp was conducted offline and invited international participants after the event was held online during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-2022.

The Summer Camp 2023 included forestry basics, field management practices, survival techniques, and soft skill training such as leadership, teamwork, communication skills, problem-solving, and decision-making. These topics were designed to enhance the competencies of the students.
