The Forestry Alumni Sharing Session at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was held on September 5, 2018, in the Faculty of Forestry Hall. The theme for the session was “Forest Conservation in North Sumatra.” The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Siti Latifah, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D. In her opening remarks, she expressed her hope that such sharing sessions would continue, as alumni experiences are eagerly awaited by students. Alumni are expected to serve as role models for students in pursuing careers in government institutions, NGOs, private companies, and other sectors.
The session featured Muhammad Indra Kurnia, S.Hut., currently the Deputy Director of the Sumatran Orangutan Foundation – Orangutan Information Center, as the main speaker. Indra is an alumnus of the 2001 cohort (the third batch) from the Forestry Study Program at USU. During his presentation, he encouraged students to prepare themselves by maximizing their learning, broadening their knowledge, and building networks with various organizations during their studies.
The theme “Forest Conservation in North Sumatra” was chosen to align with Indra's expertise in conservation. He highlighted several conservation challenges in the field, including wildlife poaching, forest encroachment, mining, and the overexploitation of certain resources. Students found the session engaging, as it presented real-world conservation issues.
Indra also shared that his organization welcomes students interested in internships. He concluded his presentation with a message emphasizing that conserving the Earth is a shared responsibility for everyone involved in the forestry sector.
