Visiting a place can refresh the heart and mind, especially if it provides an unforgettable experience. PUI Mangrove 2024 summer course participants might feel this when visiting the USU 2 campus in Kwala Bekala, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. The campus, which is located on the site of an unproductive oil palm plantation, provides views of gardens and forests with lush trees and very fresh air.
This visit is one of the agendas designed for this year's summer course activities. The activity, which more than 30 participants attended, was held on Thursday, August 29, 2024. The beginning of this activity was the gathering of participants at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) Medan. Using the Lintas USU Bus that had been provided, all participants left for the USU 2 campus at around 14.00 WIB. Arriving at the USU Bekala Campus, all participants were warmly welcomed by Dr. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc. as Vice Dean II, along with the education staff who were ready and waiting for the arrival of the guests.
Before the room tour, all participants were treated to various snacks and drinks. After eating the dishes that had been provided, all participants were then guided around the USU Bekala campus. Not to forget, all participants were directed to visit laboratories in the campus environment. There, they were allowed to witness various ongoing research. In this activity, the visitors also saw multiple types of fungi in the Forest Cultivation Laboratory. After the room tour, visitors were directed to a greenhouse filled with various plant species ranging from semar bags to colorful orchids. All participants seemed enthusiastic and excited about the entire plant collection in front of them. In addition to being allowed to pamper their eyes with the fresh scenery in the greenhouse, the visitors were also allowed to harvest and taste the peppers directly. A look of joy appeared on their faces when they were allowed to harvest the blushing red peppers.
After carrying out the room tour and visiting the greenhouse, the activity continued by visiting the arboretum not far from the USU Bekala campus. All visitors were invited to walk around and get to know various tree species guided by Dr. Bejo Slamet. Even though they had just finished participating in various quite tiring activities, the visitors seemed very excited to explore the arboretum, inhabited by more than 80 species of trees. They often asked questions about the arboretum to answer their curiosity. The activity, which participants from various countries attended, ended with a trip back to their lodging located on the UNPRI Medan Campus.
