Medan-USU: First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo visited Universitas Sumatera Utara to motivate thousands of high school students in Medan to fight against drugs and pornography, as drug abuse has become highly alarming, with students and university youth as the main targets. The event, held at the USU Auditorium on Wednesday (02/11/16), was titled “Indonesian Youth Unite Against Drugs and Pornography for a Bright Future.”
Accompanied by Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, Iriana urged students, as the young generation, to avoid drugs as they could destroy morals, mental health, and future prospects. She expressed happiness hearing several high school students vow not to try or use drugs and to stay away from pornography.
Separately, Brigadier General Andi Loedianto, Head of North Sumatra BNNP, explained in his speech about the 3K approach to drug prevention: Know Yourself, Know Your Friends, and Know Your Environment. He emphasized that these steps, combined with family supervision, could effectively prevent drug abuse.
Adisti, a student from SMAN 2 who attended the event, stated that the program was excellent as it provided her and her peers with a better understanding of the dangers of drugs for their generation. She hoped similar activities would be conducted regularly, not just during the First Lady’s visit, and also encouraged all youth to avoid drugs and pornography.

The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., along with his wife, welcomed the First Lady to USU and expressed his gratitude for USU being chosen as the event’s venue. “We are proud, as hosts, to provide a place for the First Lady and her entourage for this program on drug prevention among youth,” said the Rector.
According to Prof. Runtung, the event was a form of resistance against drugs. USU has also been committed to combating drugs by implementing drug tests for new students during the 2015-2016 admission period.
He explained that drugs severely damage mental health, character, and physical well-being. In the long term, drug abuse can hinder national competitiveness and progress. “Therefore, we have no other choice but to declare war on drugs,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, the Rector noted that drug trafficking, drug abuse, and pornography are classified as extraordinary and serious crimes. Drug crimes often involve cross-border networks, posing a real threat that requires urgent and serious attention. “We urge all elements of society and the nation to care and focus on preventing and combating drugs and pornography, which can destroy the very fabric of society and the nation,” he concluded.
