The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), carried out an international community service program by planting mangroves in Beras Basah, Langkat. This program aims to protect coastal ecosystems while raising public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation.
FHUT PR – The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held an international community service activity entitled “Mangrove Plantation for The Conservation of Biodiversity and Environmental Sustainability” on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Beras Basah, Langkat, North Sumatra. This activity is part of the faculty’s commitment to supporting environmental preservation and global biodiversity conservation.
The activity involved students, lecturers, and communities both from within Indonesia and abroad, focusing on planting mangrove seedlings in the Beras Basah coastal area. In addition to the planting action, the program also included outreach and education on the vital role of mangrove ecosystems in protecting shorelines from erosion, providing habitats for various marine species, and serving as natural carbon sinks contributing to climate change mitigation.
“This international community service program is not only about planting trees, but also about planting awareness and hope for a more sustainable future of coastal areas,” said one of the lecturers from the USU Faculty of Forestry involved in the event.
This activity is expected to deliver a significant positive impact on environmental conservation efforts, while also inspiring communities and younger generations to actively participate in protecting nature. The USU Faculty of Forestry reaffirmed its commitment to continually contribute to environmental preservation programs at both national and international levels.
