Implementation of the Faculty of Forestry Guest Lecture Program in Supporting USU to Achieve World Class University
The Guest Lecture program is a supporting part of the World Class University program. The activity is in the form of lectures conducted by foreign lecturers. The foreign lecturer/Guest Lecturer provides lecture material topics in accordance with the curriculum. The foreign lecturer / Guest Lecturer provides lecture material for 6 hours. The foreign lecturer/guest Lecturer will be accompanied by Host Lecturers.
Remote Sensing Technology has become an important part of natural resources, forests, and environmental management. Remote Sensing Technology is applied in various fields related to spatial analysis. Spatial analysis has supported efforts to protect biodiversity and monitor natural resources. Knowledge of remote sensing and technology mastery are important to supporting sustainable natural resource management. Through the Remote Sensing Course, students of the Faculty of Forestry can understand the scope and development of technology and master the basic technology of Remote Sensing. Lectures given by Foreign Guest Lecturers provide material related to the use of Remote Sensing technology in the current digital era, especially in biodiversity protection and tropical rainforest monitoring. USU Faculty of Forestry students need to know how to utilize remote sensing technology in forestry and the environment.
On November 10, 2021, the Faculty of Forestry invited Guest Lecturers for Remote Sensing Courses from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente, namely Assoc. Prof. Thomas A. Groen, with expertise in Spatial Ecology. The host lecturer was the Coordinator of the Remote Sensing Course and an alumnus from the University of Twente, Dr. Anita Zaitunah. The lecture’s theme was “Contribution of Remote Sensing to Support Biodiversity and Monitoring of Tropical Forest.” The first Guest Lecture activity of the three meetings was opened by the Rector of the University of North Sumatra, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si. It was attended by the Dean, Vice Deans, Head and Secretary of the Study Program, Lecturers, and Students of the USU Faculty of Forestry.
The first lecture covered the application of Remote Sensing in monitoring forests and biodiversity. Prof. Groen gave a very interesting and comprehensive presentation on this topic. Students and lecturers raised many questions in the discussion session.
This activity is also part of the implementation of collaboration between the Faculty of Forestry and the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, which is included in the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions signed by the two Deans on September 16, 2019. Hopefully, the Guest Lecture activity can support USU’s achievement in improving its world-class university ranking and open up opportunities for future collaborations.
