Saturday, December 2, 2023, marked an important moment for students of Forest Resource Conservation, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). On that day, they expressed their love for the environment through a cleanup initiative called AKSIKU (Environmental Cleanup and Interpretation Board Installation) at Mount Sibayak, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. This activity not only involved students and stakeholders but also left a positive impression on the local community and visitors, reminding them of the importance of protecting and cherishing the environment.
The event was initiated by Dr. Achmad Siddik Thoha, S.Hut., M.Si., Dr. Pindi Patana, S.Hut., M.Sc., and Moehar Maraghiy Harahap, S.Hut., M.Sc., lecturers of the Project Management and Conservation Fundraising course. A total of 57 participants and 7 laboratory assistants actively participated in this initiative. AKSIKU is part of a series of activities under the course and serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their care for the environment.
In addition to cleaning the area of waste materials such as plastic bottles, straws, plastic bags, cigarette butts, and paper, the event also included the installation of interpretation boards and the provision of trash bins along the hiking trail. The interpretation boards, installed at various points, aim to remind visitors to maintain cleanliness wherever they go. Meanwhile, the provision of trash bins is intended to make it easier for visitors to dispose of waste properly, fostering a love for the environment.
This initiative was driven by a strong desire to create a clean and comfortable environment, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. Moreover, the support and cooperation of various parties involved were the main drivers of AKSIKU's success. Therefore, raising awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental preservation among all stakeholders is expected to sustain AKSIKU and similar environmentally conscious actions to create a cleaner and more comfortable environment.
